Serena Williams on Wednesday night set up a semifinal at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells against a player who handed her the most devastating loss of her 2014 season.

The world No. 1 last night entered the semifinal round after squashing the 15-match winning streak of Timea Bacsinszky, the No. 27 seed, 7-5, 6-3. Bacsinszky entered Indian Wells winning back-to-back titles in Acapulco and Monterrey.

The Swiss broke the world No. 1 to start the match.

“I played well, but sometimes playing well isn’t enough against Serena,” Bacsinszky said. “I think I was giving her a hard time, so I give all the credit to her — she was just stronger out there today.”

In the telling stat, Williams hit twice as many winners as the Swiss.

Serena in the semifinals will meet No. 3 seed Simona Halep, who was likewise tested early in a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 12 seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

“She was opening the court pretty well with the angles, and it’s really tough to play and hit the balls from wide in the court, so I knew I had to start playing more aggressively and hit more into the court,” Halep said about turning the match around. “I just tried to relax my body and my mind, fight for every point and play my best.”

Serena says this time she is full aware of the capabilities of Halep after getting run over last year in round robin play at the year-end WTA Championships.

“I expect her to be playing an incredible game,” Williams said. “I don’t think I was necessarily ready for that the first time. I’m ready for her to be the great player that she’s capable of being.”

In round of 16 play for the men, the lone upset of the day was No. 12 Feliciano Lopez ousting No. 5 Kei Nishikori 6-4, 7-6(2).

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the late match stared down a challenge from John Isner, in the end refusing to blink in taking down the big American 6-4, 7-6(5).

“I played a great game at 3-all in the first set [for the break] and that gave me the first set,” Djokovic said. “And after that it was anybody’s game really. The second set went over 60 minutes. We were both very tight towards the end, and just very fortunate to go through it.”

Djokovic will next meet No. 32 seed Bernard Tomic who kept his comeback roll going, outlasting fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

“He’s getting mentally more confident, more comfortable on the court,” Djokovic said of Tomic. “He starts to believe even more. Perhaps also the success of Kokkinakis and [Nick] Kyrgios motivated him to really get serious and work, and the talent is there, the touch is there, he’s got a game. It’s going to be a tricky match for me.”

Other Top 10-seeded winners were No. 2 Roger Federer easing past unseeded American Jack Sock 6-3, 6-2; No. 3 Rafael Nadal rolling No. 13 Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-4; No. 4 Andy Murray routine-ing Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3; No. 6 Milos Raonic serving past No. 17 Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-2; and No. 9 Tomas Berdych struggling past No. 27 Lukas Rosol 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

“I played a very clean match,” said Federer, who will next meet Berdych. “I think I served great. I was also actually returning very well.”

Nadal will next face the giant-serving Raonic.

“He’s an opponent that you don’t want to play against because you play under a lot of pressure, every point,” Nadal said. “I know I need to be at my 100 percent to have any chance.”

Murray on Thursday will meet Lopez, who sits at a career-high No. 12.

“Against Lopez, I’ve got a good record against him, but he’s always a tough opponent because of the way that he plays and the way that he serves,” Murray said. “He’s also still improving. He’s been playing the best tennis of his career these last 18 months or so, and obviously had a great win today against Nishikori.”

61 Comments for Serena Advances, Djokovic v Tomic Thurs. at Indian Wells

Michael Says:

Novak is seemingly appearing to be extremely confident to defend his title.

TGIT Says:

Of the big four, Roger has been the most impressive.

Djoko has been shaky against some lesser opponents.

Roger has been better, cleaner and quicker with a tougher draw.

just my 2 cents.

Ronn Says:

What tougher draw, TGIT? We’re in the quarters now, so we’ll see what Federer’s got- especially if he meets Rafa in the semis, lol…

skeezer Says:

TGIT,
Apparently you should have re worded that to:
“Rafa has had a better, cleaner and quicker cake walk draw.”

brando Says:

First of all: none of these top 4 guys- so far- really have faced a top draw opponent IMO. They have won matches you’d expect then to win. That’s it. Of the lot though, Federer-IMHO- has looked the most clinical, impressive. Going forward: I think Federer and Nadal have-with ease- the 2 toughest matches. Rafa? Up against the world number 6, huge server, hitter. Rafa said it straight: no one wants to face a guy like milos for obvious reasons: tough to break, close to no rhythm, huge pressure on your serve etc. So that’s a tough out for sure for rafa, especially when he ain’t at his top level. Then Roger has the toughest opponent, difficult matchup: Tomas Berdych. I give the edge to fed here, but Tomas can win this one. The difference really is little in this one.the other QF will be straight set affairs for the huge favs in those matches.

jeez Says:

I believe SEEMINGLY & APPEARING have the same meaning!!??

Daniel Says:

Agree Brando,
can’t see Murray losing to Lopez nor Djoko to Tomic. Fed and Nadal can be upset, but so far Nadal never lost to Raonic and he return game is on. Fed can lose to Berdych, actually Berdych is one of the few active players with more than 5 wins over Fed. So apart from Nadal, Djoko and Murray, Berdych pose the biggest threat to him. Even so thing we’re gonna have Fedal 34 Saturday. And Djoko x Murray, which will be very interesting after their AO encounter.

brando Says:

@Daniel: Agree. In pure performance terms, and this is only my opinion, barring his AO blip (I sympathize with Fed on that one since he was seriously unlucky playing in those conditions. Infact Rafa even said he got unlucky there) Federer has been playing the best tennis this year. His serving has been amazing and his return stats seem to be better than ever. IF Fedal were to meet, I would see Fed as the fav and likely winner, but even a loss would ‘ve fine since it means Rafa got to test himself against the best performer this year for me. Fed’s game is clicking at the moment for sure.Yet, Berdych is right, right up there for me also performance wise. He’s my most improved player of the year so far. He doesn’t get the respect his tennis deserves and him v Fed will be a great matchup for the neutrals: 2 attacking players with a different style in how they go about business. Its a 50/50 for me with a edge to Fed due his big match pedigree and mental strength.Rafa? He’s been nervous on his serve at times and he was correct to say he can get away it with young, Simon but no chance v Milos. The return has been good but in all honesty: Simon and Young were serving up rubbish, so I don’t really place any value on that. So he needs a big, big performance to win. It’s a welcome test for him, a tough and good one. One in which he’s up against a top 6 player that has set the tone already for rafa: step up or you’ll lose. I’m glad he has that test since he can lose for sure. I give Milos a real chance here since he faces a Rafa who ain’t completely clicking at the moment. The other 2 QF’s I have no excitement over since the matches should be very straightforward. Andy owns Lopez in every way, Novak will have no issue v a player who’s outside the top 30, erratic nor one who has any real weapons.

jane Says:

federer has not beat nadal in 3 years; the last time was 2012 at indian wells. personally i would not put fed as the fav if that match happens.

but he is definitely playing great now, as he has been throughout 2014 till now. any loss to fed is not one to be ashamed of.

i thought andy and nole had interesting first round opponents, with vasek and baggy, who are both streaky players. andy had kohls who can also be streaky, and nole had isner, never an easy out. isner played well last night too.

fed’s toughest opponent was seppi for sure. the first set was close. is seppi the only player to break fed’s serve here? i don’t think sock or schwartzman could challenge him much.

nadal’s toughest opponent was simon, who can be tricky. i know he lost a set to sijsling but perhaps that was just adjusting to conditions? i didn’t see that match.

anyhow, the fed/berd semi could be interesting. it will say a lot about where either guy’s game is at.

brando Says:

Yawn. you tell someone to —- off and they still poodle after your posts.

jane Says:

funny how some think everything is about themselves.

brando Says:

LOL, less than 5 minutes to respond: you’ll never find dedicated poodles like Brando has on here! I’m touched!

Patson Says:

Brando. Come on now, that’s not cool.

chris ford1 Says:

Some of the matchups are interesting indeed.

* Tomic is 0-3 against Djoker OFFICIALLY. But Tomic beat him soundly in Hopman Cup in 2013. Tomic is also playing well, very well. It is hard to see Nole losing, but I think the match will be no gimme. The two younger Greek-Aussies may have forced Bernard to realize he must grow up or lose his Alpha Australian male player status and be shunted to the side. He may still be shunted to the side….but Kyrgios could be the next Jerzy Janowicz. Put on a pedestal by fans obsessing over the next teen phenom and toppling over with injury and erratic performance. Tomic -Djoker could be a great match for fans.

*I think Nadal is vulnerable to a big, hard serving guy blowing him off the court. Lke being Delpo-ized a la Shanghai 2013. Raonic has potential there. Should be Nadal, but Milos has been consistent, building confidence in the past two years. Beating Nadal, even a Nadal at 90%, would be a huge step forward for the moose of the North.

*A couple last gasp Fedal matches where circumstances give Roger a fighting chance are few and far inbetween, but IW and Federer’s top form so far make most of us want it. Sometimes in recent years Fed, especially on clay vs. Rafa, is like the baby seal confronting the Canadian fisherman with a club. You know how it ends for the seal and what sort of contest it will be. So we hope Fed can get by Berdych, who has been a mini-nemesis for Roger in recent years.

* Murray & Lopez is 8-0. Slight chance for Lopez, though. Feliciano has the ability to beat Andy if things align right.

skeezer Says:

Patson Says:

@chris

Right on about Milos vs Nadal. If Milos serves superbly – and it is very likely based on the previous matches – it would put a lot of pressure on Nadal’s serve. The key in this match would be Nadal’s ability to break Raonic’s serve. Should be a cracker. As you said, wouldn’t be surprised one bit if Milos wins in straights. Nadal has to serve very well himself because he sure won’t get a lot of opportunities to break Milos. I’m putting my money on Milos for this one.

Nole, I’d say he’ll be more comfortable facing Tomic than he was against Isner last night. Nole in 2 sets.

Fed in 3 against Berdman. Tough match but Fed wins it at the end.

Murray in 2 against Lopez.

Markus Says:

Djokovic was able to handle those 130+ mph serves by Isner who had about 80% of his serves in. Of course, Isner does not do anything else. However, it tells me that no matter how good any of his opponents are in the tournament, Djokovic can handle him. Everything else about his game is top-notch.

Nadal is playing well again. The deeper he gets into a tournament, the tougher he gets, both mentally and physically. He’s my next pick.

Federer sometimes lapses into one bad match after playing brilliantly. He has been brilliant of late. Some shocking (or is it?) development may happen. He’s old, remember? No matter what everyone says, that’s a negative in a field of other brilliant remaining players who are not even in their 30s yet.

Andy Murray can just suddenly disappoint out of nowhere.

That’s how I feel. Who I want to win may be different from who I think will win but so far in this tournament, everybody who I want to win has won and everybody who I want to lose has lost (men and women). I hope to continue to be happy.

brando Says:

@Patson: what? Novak has nolefam, why can’t thou have Brandofam on here? Both fanbases poodle after the object of their devotion in such religious fashion. I’m only impressed. How can I not be? I blast my followers, Shame them, ridicule the phoniness, fake nature of some and yet…….they still tip toe back to moi. Without my having to whistle for them. I’ll be honest: I admire their devotion. How can I not? They are consistent, I’ll give them that.

Patson Says:

@Markus

You are as wise as Marcus Aurelius.

Okiegal Says:

Loving tennis today…..finally being televised! I can’t tell you how great it is to be watching it on my Samsung smart TV. I actually saw a tiny bug on one of the flowers. I know it has to be almost as good as being there…..I said almost! It is a beautiful day on the desert……raining in OK.

I’m anxious for Andy and Feli!! I hope we see a good competitive match!! Can’t wait. :) C’mon Andy!

Hippy Chick Says:

Okie how it Rafa play last night?….

Hippy Chick Says:

sorry how did?

Okiegal Says:

@Chick……I am far from being a tennis analyst, but I thought he looked a lot better in that match than in his prior matches. I usually go to his site and look at the stats but haven’t done so yet. However, sometime you can look at the stats and wonder how did my guy win?? Lol I will say this, I was more relaxed during this one. There will be opponents he’s facing coming up if he loses serve, it will a tough recovery, especially against the ace specialists!! Que sera sera!!

KatH Says:

Oh my – all of the comments contain such measured opinions. So balanced. The draw was one thing, but as it has turned out every player left in the contest has almost equal chance to survive into semi-finals — the exception being Tomic v Nole. I think Andy has been playing close to his best; that Federer and Nadal are a slight shift off their best and that Berdych is the absolute keenest player to advance with Milos as second keenest. My guess anybody other than Tomic.

Okiegal Says:

There was a retirement in Jelena’s match…..showing Novak and Isner last set…..I guess the bigger they are the harder they fall?? I don’t want anyone getting hurt, but hope Rafa gets the “w” over big serving Milos!

Okiegal Says:

On playing Novak…..patience, a virtue! John was patient and won a 31 shot rally…..with some good shot selections.

Okiegal Says:

^^^^^ I will add……for naught!

Sidney Says:

@jane, never mind him. One of those still in denial that Novak is the best player, and has been for a while now! And the major reason for the end of the duopoly. Ha!

Brando Says:

‘On playing Novak…..patience, a virtue!’:

^ This!

Hippy Chick Says:

Sidney i agree about Novak been the best player on tour ATM,and i agree with most of the comments on this thread, and i would put him down as the favorite to win this torney,im not a hater though however as i still think the guys beatable….

Margot Says:

Good start by Andy!
Feliciano looks very …hot ;)

Hippy Chick Says:

Margot lol err but doesnt he always? ….;p

Giles Says:

Sidney. FOS man!!

the DA Says:

Andy has come to play. He’s not letting Feli’s slicing ways put him off. Nice and controlled. There were already 3 great points before the 3rd game. More please!

Okiegal Says:

@Margot @4:26…10-4 good buddy…..hubba hubba!! Lol

Okiegal Says:

@Margot……Your boy looking good today!

Hippy Chick Says:

Okie/Margot lol calm down please ladies ;)….

Okiegal Says:

@Chick……I don’t think Rafa went to the towel as much……now, since I’m watching it on my computer, smaller screen, might not have been as noticeable….I was halfway watching TV at the same time too. I don’t think any time warnings either?? Could have missed that too, Spanish speaking commentators. I’m sure someone will let me know if I’m wrong.

Hippy Chick Says:

Okie if its true then thats good news, even i get on his case to curry up sometimes,as i wouldnt want him to lose a point at a crucial time….

Okiegal Says:

Just saw the rankings…..Rafa way behind top two. Novak is way ahead of the pack!! I knew this but didn’t realize the vast difference between 1 and 3.
“Rafa, you got some catching up to do, but gotta pass Feddy Bear first”! Tall order……. :(

chris ford1 Says:

Djokovic is very open that he got better by being an apt student of both Federer and Rafa, learning..
Which brings up Okiegal’s perceptive remark.

I think he took more from Rafa in assembling Nole 2.0. Rafa’s huge heart. Nadals conditioning. And awareness that the key to Nadal was how he patiently waited until his opponents had been put in a weak position and only then did Rafa strike, or collecting easy points when others like Nole1.0 , Fed, Jo Tsonga just lost their own patience and went for a low percentage big shot.

Since 2011. Nole that can stay with Rafa and wait till his time to strike comes. Against lesser foes, it is to play high reliablity angled shots until the other player with a less consistent game makes an unforced error. A reason why I love watching Nole and Rafa play each other so much. It’s two gladiators with little quit who are also playing chess at the same time (with an assist to Rafa from Uncle Toni).

And Rafa has shown he can play leapfrong and come back and beat Nole a good part of the time since 2012 by new strategies.

And now we see what Djokovic is trying to do to get even better. Go for Nole 3.0. Extend his longevity like Federers by shortening points by better advances to net and good net play. Get gobs of free points by serving better, even though he probably will never equal Feds serve. But compared to even 2013, his serve has become a true weapon. Have Roger’s sense of the moment he must deliver big on.
And Boris Becker was hired to help add those Fed-like features.
Don’t know if he will get there to Nole 3.0, but like his quest for the French Open and beating the best clay player ever…the quest is laudable. At times, some experts have caught short period glimpses of either the unbeatable Nole Serbinator in a zone better than Rafa or Fed in their best moments – or the Nole 3.0 that is starting to develop.
The other pros best hope it is the former..

KatH Says:

Margot – Got my crystals at the ready – hope not needed. Andy got 1st set – fingers crossed for him not going awol in the 2nd.

Margot Says:

@OK
He is, but waiting for the inevitable blip!
@Hippy
But he looks even hotter today…;)
@ the DA
That back hand is a bit of a liability, I think. Some lovely shots from Andy and a fabulous winner from a defensive position. Wub.

Okiegal Says:

@Chick……I’m calm…..what keeps me calm is my good looking Okieguy…..wink wink. :)

Margot Says:

Hi KatH.
Good to see you!

Hippy Chick Says:

Aww Okie thats so sweet talking about your significant other, but i feel the same about Hippy man too, although Mr Jackmans still the only man id leave him for lol….

About Rafa and the ranking, like the guy himself,i have to say its something im really that obsessed about,i just hope he and Andy both bag a GS this year, and ill be delighted….

Giles Says:

So Tomic pulls out and that joker boy gets a free pass into the semis. Some have all the undeserved luck! Geez!

Nikola Says:

Tomic just pull out from IW due to a back injury. Pity, i was waiting this one.

the DA Says:

@Margot – There were many fantastic shots today: BH passing shots, dinks, returns and one gorgeous lob to break. I don’t think I’ve seen him look any more comfortable on that court. Of course it wouldn’t be one of his matches without one brain fart. But I’m very happy with what I saw. The extra work on the serve was also apparent. :D

Margot Says:

@ the DA
Yes, the serve was much better and when he uses the BDTL it usually means he’s feeling confident, which is good news. First Masters 1000 semi since 2013. Wowzer!
Did u c Amelie on her feet and clapping at one point? The darling :) Mr Po Face never did that.

the DA Says:

@Margot – Yes. She’s more animated. It’s been a looong road back to this first M1000 SF. 2014 was such a detour. But I never stopped believing he’d get back on track. >happy bunny<

Margot Says:

@ the DA
Said on other thread, duh, I was drooling for most of match and nothing to do with Deliciano’s charms either!
Yes a long road indeedy but he’s getting back and when you see that old magic at work, it just takes your breath away all over again.

Okiegal Says:

@Margot…..Congrats on Andy’s win today, he looked sharp! You had to be drooling over that win!! I wonder how Judy’s pulse was beating?? Lol

Okiegal Says:

@Chick…….I don’t pay very much attention to rankings either……obviously….as I wouldn’t have been so shocked about how far behind he was behind Novak…..but the circumstances haven’t been the best for Rafa……

metan Says:

Semifinal between Andy and Nole is set up. I want to see how Andy revenged.

Okiegal Says:

@chris ford1

Good post @ 4:57……especially the part about me being perceptive……I’ve been told that before!

Will the w/o be good or bad for Novak?? Poor Bernie, all his good play, for naught…..well, not totally……a bigger pay check coming his way!! It is a shame because he was playing some great tennis.
He just now said something about a wisdom tooth causing problems and also his back.

Sidney Says:

@HC, I know. You’re fair in your comments. And of course Novak is beatable, most definitely. I wasn’t referring to you. You’re nowhere near that small prolific and bitter group of posters who haven’t gotten over the duopoly breakup.

Sidney Says:

Anyways, I flew into Los Angeles yesterday, and I saw Fernando Verdasco at the airport. He must have been on his way home or on to another tourney.

I thought I also saw Nic Almagro, but I am not sure it was him.

jane Says:

aww, what a shame about tomic. i was really hoping to see nole/tomic play. bernie seemed to be in good form based on his draw wins.

what’s with these young guys and all their injuries? is it age? lack of proper preparation, training, genetics? it just seems like a lot of them are injury-prone.

as for andy/nole, if andy wins – and he kind of seems due – it’d be great if he faces and beats rafa in the final. he is overdue a win over him. i believe they played in a final here once a long time ago, but it was a very one-sided.

i see fed/berd and rafa/raonic are scheduled for early day time matches tomorrow.

jane Says:

“Lke being Delpo-ized a la Shanghai 2013” … cf1, i just don’t see raonic as having that same ability. he doesn’t have the raw power that delpo does.

for example, the 1 time raonic beat fed, in paris last year, it was more due to coming forward and finishing points that way than blowing him off the court. he also returned fed’s serve fairly well that day and served over 20 aces. i guess that’s one way he could trouble nadal, if he can return his second serve well.

but in 5 best of 3 matches, nadal has lost only 1 set to milos. he’s never even had to play a tiebreak against him.

thus i’ll be surprised if milos wins, but *very* surprised were he to do so in straight sets. certainly nothing is impossible, but some things are more likely than others.

Okiegal Says:

@Jane…

I’ve been wondering about the injury prone young guns too. Watt up wid dat??
