It was a tough start for American men on the first day of the men’s action at Indian Wells. Four men were on court, just one advanced to the second round, that was wildcard Bjorn Fratangelo who hammered Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2.

Ryan Harrison had a strong start to the year but was dismissed by Damir Dzumhur 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Harrison struggled early going down 4-0 in the first but righted the ship until late in the third.

Promising teens Frances Tiafoe and Reilly Opelka also fell, both to qualifiers. Tiafoe was beat-down by Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-3 while the towering Opelka ran out of gas against German Peter Gojowczyk 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

20-year-old Karen Khachanov made an impressive Indian Wells debut cruising past Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo 6-1, 7-5.

“It feel great. It’s my first time here in Indian Wells,” said Khachanov. “I’ve heard a lot about this tournament and I’m really happy that I could get through to the second round. Today I had to be ready from the first point, concentrate 100 per cent and play my game. That is the main focus in all the matches at the ATP World Tour level. I had to be there the whole match and fight to the end to get the win.”

Alexandr Dolgopolov, Vasek Pospisil and Jeremy Chardy were among the other winners from the top half.

The bottom half starts today highlighted by Taylor Fritz who battles Benoit Paire.

Rafael Nadal is in doubles play with Bernard Tomic. Andy Murray (w/Dan Evans) and Novak Djokovic (w/Victor Troicki) are on in doubles today.

A good win for Fratangelo against Tomic in the first round, and he matches his performance here last year.

Bernard proved again why he remains one of my least favorite players to watch on the ATP. He just looks so disinterested on the court, and so often seems to lack the fighting spirit needed to win matches that get tough. Makes me wonder why he even goes out there sometimes.

We’ll see if playing doubles with Nadal can inject some pep into his step! Unless he decides to pull out of doubles before they even get started.

My goodness, Andy and Dan beat Lopez and Lopez! Result!

Atomic said he wanted to get into the top 10 this year. Yeah right! Perhaps Rafa can sort him out. Can just imagine the scenes on court if Rafa thinks Bernie isn’t bothering…..

RZ Says:

@Margot – and I was there! :-) It was a fun match. Dan more than held his own on the court with the three other guys. And Andy hit some scorching serves. A couple of them were in the 130s.

I also got to see the Zverev Brothers play against Thiem and Kohlschreiber. That was a very fun match. Thiem was really ripping his backhand and hustling all over the court. But the brothers worked well as partners, whereas Thiem and Kohlschreiber had a couple of moments where it was clear they didn’t regularly play doubles together. After the match at the net, there was a nice moment between Thiem and Sascha Zverev as they gave each other a hug.

@AM, I couldn’t get any good pics on my phone from Andy’s match to upload and share. I’ll have to somehow get a link for my camera photos next week or so and share them then.

I went to Indian Wells about 10 years ago. What a great event. I’m jealous!

RZ Says:

@BBB- it is a terrific event. I am very lucky to live within driving distance.

BBB Says:

That’s even worse! I would love to live in that part of the country.
