Fritz, Isner Lead Americans Into Dallas SF; Wolf Upsets Tiafoe

Three Americans advanced to the semifinals at the ATP event in Dallas on Friday, including new star JJ World.

The sixth-seeded former Ohio State Buckeye upset No. 2 Frances Tiafoe in a match that went the distance 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Wolf cracked 11 aces, won 47/57 (82%) on first serve points, 18/38 (47%) on second serves. Wolf broke in the ninth game of the third set for 5-4 then served it out winning the final 3 games of the contest.

Tiafoe added 14 aces, won 45/61 (74%) of first service points, just 11/26 (42%) on second serves in his first meeting with his countryman.


“I usually don’t think about the outcome, so I was just feeding off the energy of the fans and playing every point as hard as I could,” Wolf said.

“I’ve just tried to create a little more consistency,” he added. “The fans might not like it when I’m not putting up 140 serves, but my coaches like it.”

Wolf advances his 2nd career tour-level semifinal. He’ll now take on the big veteran John Isner who ousted Emilio Gomez 7-6(10-8), 7-5.

Top seed Taylor Fritz defeated No. 7 seed Marcos Giron 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3. He’ll now take on Yibing Wu who topped Adrian Mannarino in straights.

Fritz hit nine aces, won 46/57 (81%) of first serve points, 14/26 (54%) on second serves, was 1/2 on break chances.

Fritz broke serve in the second game of the third set for 2-0 to seal it.

Marcos Giron drops to 1-13 against Top 10 players. Fritz is now up on is ahead of Giron 2-1 in their tour-level encounters.

Fritz moves into his 18th career semifinal.

Looking at Sunday, feature matches include semifinals play, Yibing Wu – No. 1 Taylor Fritz, in a first-time tour-level collision. No. 6 J.J. Wolf – No. 5 John Isner, in a first-time tour-level clash.
