Due to a left calf injury he firs sustained last month at Halle, 5th-seeded Kei Nishikori withdrew from Wimbledon today. The 25-year-old re-injured the calf late in a first round 5-set win over Simone Bolelli.

“It’s the same injury, it got better before the first match,” Nishikori said. “I thought it would be okay but in the last match in fifth set it was hurting too much and I decided not to play today.”

Nishikori was to play Santiago Giraldo on Centre. Giraldo now advances to his second straight Wimbledon third round.

Nishikori was in the same section as Marin Cilic and was projected to face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. He has retired three times before in Grand Slam play including 2008 Wimbledon.

Margot Says:

It’s as hot as heck here jane, that’s for sure :) And CC gets even hotter, as it’s so enclosed it holds the heat.
Terrific scrap going on between Cilic and Berankis at the mo. Berankis is playing better but Cilic’s serve gets him out of trouble time and agian.

Hippy Chick Says:

BMS is out playing Ivanovic ATM,nice to see some underdogs giving the big names a good test….

jane Says:

margot yesterday during andy’s match they said it was 41 on CC!!! 0_o

Hippy Chick Says:

Ivanovic loses first set, wonder if we will see another scalp?….

Margot Says:

Bum! Match ends in a double fault.
Cilic very, very lucky to squeak out of that one. Berankis was a much better player, only Cilic’s serve kept him in.

M Says:

@Margot – you are so right.

Berankis’ effort impressive, but Cilic was lucky.

He needs to play to his level — especially as an Ivanescevic protege, of all things — if he gets a crack at Novak.

Jock-KatH Says:

Margot keep your cool when all around you are losing theirs – I’m counting on you to see to Andy – the odd naughty “C’mon Andy” when you’re not supposed to I will support whole-heartedly – I’ll even put up your bail if you get “carried away” – hope you like the double entendre!!
