Kei Nishikori Withdraws From Wimbledon With A Calf Injury
Due to a left calf injury he firs sustained last month at Halle, 5th-seeded Kei Nishikori withdrew from Wimbledon today. The 25-year-old re-injured the calf late in a first round 5-set win over Simone Bolelli.
“It’s the same injury, it got better before the first match,” Nishikori said. “I thought it would be okay but in the last match in fifth set it was hurting too much and I decided not to play today.”
Nishikori was to play Santiago Giraldo on Centre. Giraldo now advances to his second straight Wimbledon third round.
Nishikori was in the same section as Marin Cilic and was projected to face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. He has retired three times before in Grand Slam play including 2008 Wimbledon.
