Following another disappointing Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal is holding off on the hardcourts in favor of returning to his favorite surface to play at Hamburg next week, the tournament confirmed yesterday.

The 10th-ranked Nadal is 34-12 on the year with two titles in Buenos Aires and Stuttgart.

David Ferrer, Gilles Simon, Tommy Robredo and Juan Monaco are a few of the other players scheduled for the event.

This is the first year since 2007 that Nadal has played a clay event during the summer after Wimbledon.

Nadal is still scheduled to play hardcourt events in Montreal on August 10 then Cincinnati on August 17.

MMT Says:

In the abstract, this is a strange decision, but then again ever since the brushed this tournament aside in favor of Madrid, they’ve been throwing a lot of money at a lot of top name players.

They got Federer a couple of years ago when he had some injuries and wanted to try out a new racquet, and I seem to recall Almagro, Monaco and Fognini going over there to duke it out a few times.

But it seems to me this is a chance for him in particular to earn some points, get some reps in live matches and feel better about himself heading into the U.S. Open. I don’t think it’s going to work and I don’t think this is the same as him playing Brasil, Argentina and Mexico before Indian Wells and Miami.

I would LOVE it, if he came to DC!

Okiegal Says:

I think he should come to Oklahoma and play on our clay! We’ve got lots of red dirt here!! Awww, that would be loverly!! :)
