Opening day at the Canadian open features quite a line-up across two cities. The men are in Montreal with 18 of the Top 20 playing (only Roger Federer and David Ferrer are absent).

Today’s schedule includes defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga against 18-year-old Borna Coric. Also, Tsonga’s countryman Gael Monfils will take on Fabio Fognini is what should quite the entertaining affair.

The last year stunned four Top 10 players including Federer in the final to win in Toronto.

The field is led by world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who returns to competitive action for the first time since defeating Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final, and No. 3 Andy Murray, who claimed his 10th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in Madrid (d. Nadal). Three-time champion Djokovic and Murray, a two-time winner in Canada, are two of four former champions in the 56-man field. The others are No. 7 seed Rafael Nadal, who lifted the title in 2005, ‘08 and ‘13.

Nadal, Djokovic and Murray are all playing consecutively on court 9.

In Toronto, Serena Williams’s return headlines the women’s event, but tonight sister Venus will have the spotlight as she meets former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki.

SG1 Says:

Was at the qualifying on Saturday. Saw Tipsarevic, Simon, Gasquet & Fognini. Saw Stakhovsky too. Stakhovsky really impressed me as did Simon. Gasquet cool to watch though his forehand is somewhat unusual.

Daniel Says:

Canadian Peliwo came back from 2-5 and than saved 2 match points to win 5 straight games and second set against Stak.

Margot Says:

@SG1
Always nice to get a first habd report.
Meanwhile…JJ v Karlovic….oh joy, not. Shan’t watch that one.

Margot Says:

Correction….sigh…”first hand.”

Margot Says:

Andy and Leander won really easily. Next up Big Bro.

Raining in Canada!!

jane Says:

^ it does rain here okie, ha ha.

yes cf1, it was novak “pulling faces” as andy put it. ;-)

jane Says:

tsonga vs. coric starting soon.

novak has bellucci first up; could be tough if it’s like their match was in roma. andy has robredo also potentially tricky. rafa doesn’t seem to be playing tomorrow.

other possibly good matches:

hotsauce vs. nick the kid
pogo vs. dimi
gulbis vs. thiem
gasquet vs. chardy
and dr. ivo vs. milos

Okiegal Says:

Yeah, Jane, it does…..dang it!! Still raining…..

jane Says:

they got in only 3 games. : / waiting to see how long the rain lasts.

Okiegal Says:

I hope it doesn’t set in like we had in Oklahoma a few weeks back…..it might never stop!! Lol

Margot Says:

@jane
Yes, Nestor was partner last tournament…keep up ;)
Andy is obviously using doubles to a) get used to conditions and b) to tune up his singles play. Which is what Mac always did.
Or maybe c) Jonas prefers watching dubs…;)

Jock-KatH Says:

Plus getting ready for doubles at Davis Cup – urgh- !!!!!!

Gypsy Gal Says:

Okie @ugust 10th 6.28pm,it was on too late unfortunatly so i recorded it,i see Gael won quite easily,no problem as i do love him as well, but wouldve liked to have seen a more competitive match, especially with all that eye candy on display, speaking of which did you watch Feli and Tommy yesterday great match lol ;)….

Okiegal Says:

@Gypsy Gal…..I watched some of it. I was disappointed……Feli is out along with Fogi…..sigh….. :( LOL
