A hobbling Venus Williams avenged a stunning loss by sister Serena at the US Open by beating Roberta Vinci today in the semifinals at the Wuhan WTA event.

Vinci, who beat Serena at the US Open foiling the World No. 1’s bid for the Calendar Slam, took the first set before Venus recovered and hung on to win 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(4).

“Definitely watching the match at the US Open, I learned a lot from Serena,” said Venus.

“If I could, I’d give my win to Serena at the US Open – unfortunately it doesn’t work like that.”

Venus, though, did injure her leg late in the match. And Vinci repeatedly questioned the chair umpire for allowing Venus to go beyond the 25-second serve time rule. And the two apparently had this exchange during which Vinci dropped an F Bomb on Venus:

In the final, Williams will met Garbine Muguruza. The Spaniard who wowed the tennis world reaching the Wimbledon final, beat Angelique Kerber

“It was a really tough match and I had to struggle today,” Muguruza said. “Venus is a legend. I’ll have to go out there and do my best to win against her and I think it’s going to be a great final.”

While Venus hurt her left leg, Muguruza also has a concern after injuring her left ankle late in her win. With both players hurting, the final will be that much more intriguing.

And if Muguruza wins, she’s qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore.

10 Comments for Venus Avenges Serena Loss, Beats F-Bombing Vinci To Reach Wuhan Final

jalep Says:

Yes, if Muguruza wins Wuhan – she’ll be #4 in the race to Singapore! If Venus wins she’ll be 7th or 8th, I think. 900 points for the Wuhan winner.

585 points for the runner-up. For Muguruza, even RU will get her close to 4th.

Venus 585 pts. for RU gets her to 12th or 13th between Bencic and Wozniaki.

But next weeks’ WTA 1000 points in Beijing – keeps the race exciting.

jalep Says:

Semifinals are next for ATP in Kuala Lumpur:
Kyrgios v F-Lo
Ferrer v Becker

and SF’s in Shenzhen:
Berdych v Robredo
Cilic v G-Lo

Dimitrov at least made the QF in Kuala Lumper but lost to Benji Becker.

jalep Says:

Should mention Tashkent Final WTA as well. It’s only 280 points but that’s a good pick-up for Donna Vekic or 20 yr old Nao Hibino of Japan.

Winning Tashkent would make Nao Hibino the #1 Japanese in the WTA at #67. The win for Vekic would bring her into the top 100 at #81. Exciting prospects for both.

Qualifying for WTA Beijing and both ATP 500’s — Beijing and Tokyo gets underway in a few hours. Should be good Tennis next week.

Siddy Says:

The more I get to know Vinci as a player, the less I like her. She has very poor sportsmanship. I am glad she loss. And I don’t say that often about a player.

Wog Boy Says:

You obviously didn’t watch the match, Vinci has all the rights to be upset, injured or not the player has to obey the rules and chair umpire to enforce them, neither of them (Venus and chair umpire) did that. Venus did similar thing to Konta when Konta was serving for the match, when Konta was ready to serve Venus decided she needs a new racquet, so she walked casually to her chair, changed the racquets, chatted with chair umpire and walked back to receive the serve. Konta had to reset herselef and promptly was broken and later lost the match.

RZ Says:

@jalep – apparently with Serena out of Singapore, there are now something like 27 players with a mathematical chance of making the cut.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Agree with you Wogboy, ive actually always liked Venus out of the two Williams sisters, but she was in the wrong not Vinci, who had every reason to be p*ssed off,the handshake at the end summed it up Vinci didnt even look at Venus it was very cold, same with Konta serving for the match the other day as it disrupted her momentum,i hope Garbine wins the title now….

Wog Boy Says:

GG,
It doesn’t look like Muguruza can do any damage, she is not playing well and missing the shots even I wouldn’t be able to miss.

Wog Boy Says:

Muguruza retired.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Wogboy thats a shame….
