Roger Federer was next on Rod Laver waiting to go on after the conclusion of the Maria Sharapova-Lauren Davis match. With Sharapova down up a set but in the second set tiebreak 5-4, Federer was hoping for a quick turnaround from the Russian so he could get on court.

And his hopes improved when Davis missed an easy volley during a 27-point rally that would have given her a 6-4 lead.

Here’s his reaction (with Grigor Dimitrov in the shot):

Unfortunately, Davis hung on to win the set. Sharapova, though, blew her out in the third round and Federer is now on court.

Federer later talked about the scene and hanging with Dimitrov before the match.

“If we’re in the same space, it happens. It wasn’t because it was Grigor we were hanging out. I didn’t even know he was back there,” Federer said.

“But because we know each other quite well, yeah, we were pretty chilled going into the match. We’ve both been well-prepared. Sometimes you don’t look much at the other guy. But with Grigor it’s different, like with other guys on tour. There’s many guys I would speak to before a match.”

Hahahaha! This is awesome. Pure Rog.

tennismonger Says:

So much for chillin’ before a big match…guess he wasn’t really that worried!

Now did anyone interview Grigor? – would be interested to hear his views of that match! ;-)

madmax Says:

Grigor was sat right next to Roge I think.

It was a classic reaction. So human and genuine joy.

He really does love playing, watching, eating, sleeping, talking tennis.

What a rally though! Incredible, and Davis nearly tipped it over the net!

That will haunt her in her dreams…

RZ Says:

I love how much Fed loves tennis.

kjb Says:

@Madmax

I think the guy sitting next to Roger was his buddy Marco Chudinelli. Him and Grigor look very similar to each other. I could be wrong.

kjb Says:

@madmax

madmax Says:

It’s good to see these tennis greats sit next to each other as ‘normal’ people – these guys had a match against each other – do or die – and are acting as if it is just a day in the life of….

So, when we read the press, hyped up, twisted stories of what happened in the locker room, etc., it’s good to see that they show they can be friends. Sit next to each other and share the excitement of what was a great rally – strange too, to see Grigor watching his ex play and being hooked on that shot.

GRIGOR kicking the tennis ball with Sevrin.

Just another normal day in the life of a tennis star!
