Meet the last Australian standing, Daria Gavrilova. The spunky 21-year-old just became an Australian citizen, and now she’s broken through to her first Grand Slam fourth round after outlasting Kristina Mladenovic 11-9 in the final set.

After the match, she gave one of the best on court interviews:

“I am very emotional,” Gavrilova said. “I mean, you can see all my emotions. I get frustrated with myself, and I guess I show it. Sometimes I shouldn’t be. When I’m happy, I guess I show it, as well.”

The 39th ranked Gavrilova, who beat Petra Kvitova earlier in the week, will next face Carla Suarez Navarro on Sunday. And with her recent success, the local Melbourne resident is now getting recognized!

“I went to the gym today just to have a bit of a stretch. The person recognized, and I was like, Oh, cool.”

She better get used to it!

This has been a fine month so far for the new Australian citizen. She won the Hopman Cup with Kyrgios, then has beat 3 quality opponents in a row in her hometown of Melbourne, and is now the last Australian still standing at the AO with the losses if Hewitt and Kyrgios.
Along the way, has gotten the fans …err…behind her.
Has pretty well made it clear she is Australian not for opportunity, but because she loves the people and the country. Very charming, even when she made, as Aussie papers said, a hilarious “clanger”. By saying she is “good from behind” in her post-match on court interview – and instantly covering her face beating the whole stadium reacting a split second later going into laughter and “Yeah, baby, yeah!!! Aussie Aussie O-O-O!” cheers.
And wrapping the interview up with saying she has no thought in her head left, she just wants to hug the whole stadium of people..

Yeah, young Dasha, yeah!!
Hope her run includes one more big upset with CSN.

I wonder why the Brit paper I read said she was the last Australian standing. After I posted, I remembered Tomic might be in it still and looked and he is. Accidental ommission, I guess, or the writer doesn’t consider Tomic a real Australian.
