2016 Australian Open Men’s Final Open Thread: Novak Djokovic v Andy Murray

In a rematch of last year, the top two players in the world, No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Andy Murray, renew their rivalry for the Australian Open title.

In their 31st career meeting, Djokovic leads 21-9. He’s also won 10 of his last 11 matches against Murray. His only loss in that time came in the final at 2015 Montreal-1000. Djokovic has a 7-6 win-loss record against Murray in Tour-level finals.

Djokovic has a 6-2 win-loss record against Murray at the Grand Slams, and a 3-2 win-loss record against Murray in Grand Slam finals. The only player Djokovic has beaten on more occasions than Murray at a Grand Slam is Roger Federer (defeated 9 times).

It will be the 6th meeting between these 2 players in a Grand Slam final which puts them in 3rd position on the all-time leaderboard for most match-ups in a Grand Slam final.

Murray and Djokovic are the closest Grand Slam finalists by age. Murray is just 7 days older than Djokovic. The previous closest Grand Slam finalists in terms of age were Guillermo Vilas and Jimmy Connors who met at the 1977 US Open when Vilas was 16 days older than Connors.

Djokovic has an 18-7 win-loss record against Murray on a hard court.

Djokovic leads each of the members of the big 5 – Federer (23-22), Murray (21-9), Nadal (24-23) and Stan Wawrinka (20-4) in their previous meetings.

“It’s no secret we know how we play against each other,” said Djokovic. “It’s two games that are very much alike, so it’s basically who’s going to outplay who from the baseline. I think serve is an important factor in tomorrow’s match. I think both of us will try to serve high percentage of first serves and not allow the other player attack the second serve too many times.

“A lot about tactics and a lot about how of course you handle your emotions of the greatness of that occasion of playing for the Grand Slam title.”

Dave Says:

Wog Boy,

I will check it out. That would be a great movie for them to watch to give them the right mental clarity before a big match for sure.

Margot Says:

http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2016-01-31/ao_analyst_how_murray_can_beat_djokovic.html

Well, in contrat to all the advice on here, I hope Andy did read this.
According to O’Shaunessy the only way Andy can win is by the early attack!
C’mon!

Van Persie Says:

I hope for an epic beautiful final.
My heart wishes Nole to win, but if Andy will be the better player today, I will be glad for him.
Nole idemooo!

Daniel Says:

First game and Murray very aggressive with some deep shots an returns. Djoko saved 1 BP already but hold.

Both feeling the ball right from the get go. This match promises.

Daniel Says:

Djoko super agressive on return, even with Andy forcing second serve. Seems both don’t want to play long rallies anymore. 15-40 Double BP for Murray. Will need to serve now

Daniel Says:

Humm, DF on BP first game…

Daniel Says:

Murray felt loosing serve, letting balls middle court and Djoko already creating winners and holding to love. 3-0 Novak once again with a quick start.

Daniel Says:

Another 15-40 game, Djoko slicing a lot so far. And he breaks again,
the match doesn’t promises anymore, 4-0 Djoko and if he holds open a 5-0 lead Andy will serve to save a bagel. breadstick almost assured.

Gypsy Gal Says:

I very much doubt Murray has the legs for a five setter, first sets looking like a bagel, boring match so far….

AndyMira Says:

Nervous start from andy..hopefully things will going better in the next 2 sets..

Margot Says:

Another whitewash coming. Everything is off today for Andy.
Nole too, too good. Enjoy your destroyer Nole fans. He is amazing.
Gonna stop watching in a minute.
:'(

Daniel Says:

5-0 in 19 min. Djoko in imperious form. Let’s see if Andy will serve better, too many second serves. He can not get desperate with the score, it’ll only makes he miss more.

Daniel Says:

Missed a sitter FH but finally a free point on serve.

Daniel Says:

Murray is playing short and Djoko playing the way he wants and he is dictating. Ace Murray 30-30. Decisive points now…

Tennisfan Says:

Oh wow Novak is unstoppable! Well grats to him for another AO as I am certain he will win if he keeps this up. He certainly deserves it when playing like this!

Daniel Says:

Murray defend great and he wins a moral point

Daniel Says:

And he holds for the first time, 5-1. But to me this match is over, the 9 times he beat Djoko he won first set and this set is over. He has to at least make it competitive the next 2 or 3. But in the end, making competitive and lose doesn’t change much, so. maybe change strategy completely.

Daniel Says:

Tennisfan, and “playing like that” against the Big Names and when it matters most, Slams Semis and Finals.

30-30

Daniel Says:

Spectacular drop shot from Djoko, set point.

AndyMira Says:

Thank God..andy’s not bageled in 1st set.

Vinod Ramanathan Says:

Let’s see what Andy got?

Vinod Ramanathan Says:

Semi or final scoreline is same

AndyMira Says:

Andy’s shots way too predictable right now..there’s nothing to surprise novak yet..he should change the gear now or it might be too late..

Gypsy Gal Says:

Novaks winning the match handily, seems unfair to fist pump Murrays errors….

Gypsy Gal Says:

He needs to hold here,or this will slip away very quickly i feel….

Sirius Says:

murray putting a lot more fight than federer

Sirius Says:

djokosmash there

J-Kath Says:

Anyone need a wry smile?

Alan Zawadzki says: Do you think Djokovic can win the golden slam”?

Answer: “I currently think that Nole could time travel if he put his mind to it.”

Daniel Says:

Djoko missed a crucial BP on 1-1 went he kept going after Murray BH, after that Murray is a different player and liking the match more each time, Djoko having trouble to hold.

Daniel Says:

Sirius, let’s wait and see if Andy wins a set.

Margot Says:

Just peeping out from behind the sofa….
Right tactics from Andy, just poor execution.
Forehand right off today and game slightly off.
Can’t be like that against the Destroyer.

Sirius Says:

second set is done

Gypsy Gal Says:

Without bringing other players into this,i actually think Milos has the right approach not wasting too much emotional energy in his matches, cool as cucumber,Murray could take a leaf there….

Gypsy Gal Says:

Yeah, game, set and match Novak, just broke there, cant see Murray coming back from two sets down, too many easy mistakes, best he can do now is keep it close….

Sirius Says:

bp murray

AndyMira Says:

That’s what’s going to happen when you let your opponent dictate the game..

Sirius Says:

murray breaks

got a feeling novak will break him again

Gypsy Gal Says:

Yes Murray finally strapping on a pair….

Sirius Says:

bp novak

Sirius Says:

massive hold from murray

FedExpress Says:

Hahaha

from 40-0 to get broken
nole doesnt deserve his set

murray and nadal should retire before fed

AndyMira Says:

Andy can’t win if he still play like this..he ‘ll lose points if he kept rallying with novak..he’s too inconsistent for that..while novak rarely made mistake..he wasted 3bp now..

Daniel Says:

Djoko serving for a 2 sets lead but faced BP already, this game could determine the match. Andy can still force a breaker.

FedExpress Says:

Set nole

What a pusher nole is. Relying on the ue of the opponent. Highest level we’ve seen folks

Daniel Says:

Match over, quite possibly in 3. Any dip in Andy’s level and Djoko will mount. Or Djoko himslef could realx a bit and Andy grows.

But almost possible Djoko losing this macth from this position.

Giles Says:

The clowns in the joker camp are a sight to behold. NOT

Pauly Says:

Murray unlucky serve was out he didn’t challenge on break point

Giles Says:

Serbian mafia!

FedExpress Says:

Th linesmen in australia are the worst on tour.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Novak is to the closest thing to the AO,to what Rafa is to the FO,so dominant its sic or sickening for fans of other players, for Murray this is heart breaking 5 defeats at the same slam,he must feel even worse than A.Rod and W….

Pauly Says:

Why didn’t Murray challenge ?
Or did he run out of challenges ?
Djokovic hit 2 double faults in a row

FedExpress Says:

nole is a lucky that he played 4 times the same mug in the final

Pauly Says:

Murray had to win second set
If he did the match could’ve become classic shootout

Gypsy Gal Says:

I went for a shower when Novak was serving to stay in the second set,so i didnt see what happened….

Pauly Says:

Another bad serve for Djokovic was out on break point
Worst linesman in tennis

Vinod Says:

Come on Murray atleast get a set !

Travis Bickle Says:

“nole is a lucky that he played 4 times the same mug in the final”

Oh, right imagine if he had to play someone like, for example, Roddick 4 times in a GS final!!!

#deluded federinas

Pauly Says:

Andy unlucky tonight 2 bad calls very unlucky
He needed luck tonight
Nothing went right for him
No overrule
Linesmen blind
You got to feel sorry for him

Giles Says:

Come on Andy don’t give up

Gypsy Gal Says:

Fedexpress i doubt you felt that way when your favorite beat Murray in the final in 2010?….

Van Persie Says:

Giles, you are soo funny!:)
Are U the new Sherlock?

AndyMira Says:

So frustrated after lost 2 sets andy still didn’t lift his game..he needs to attack more..going for broke..that’s the only way to stop novak..

Dave Says:

This was the exact same position Andy was in the last time they played each other in a major. And he came back and took it to 5. It’s not over yet.

FedExpress Says:

fed played lights out then in the final. though he got lucky vs andreev and davydenko earlier in that tournament

Gypsy Gal Says:

Van Persie i like your monikor,i must ask does it have something to do with a certain footballer that played for Arsenal and Manchester UTD?….

Pauly Says:

Murray just complained about those 2 pathetic out calls
Which were not called
Too late now but pity Coz we might’ve seen better Match

AndyMira Says:

Yeah..like that andy!

Van Persie Says:

Hi GG,yep. It’s from the footballer. Like him a lot :)

AndyMira Says:

Yess..break..keep on going andy..

FedExpress Says:

Two line calls and the lost game from 40-0 cost murray the mtch

Gypsy Gal Says:

Van Persie thought so lol, amazing footballer, which side are you on football wise?….

Pauly Says:

Murray good on him for fighting

Van Persie Says:

Bayern Muenchen fan :D

Pauly Says:

Fed express

Well said

Gypsy Gal Says:

Dave i dont remember Andy being two sets down against Novak,i believe he was two sets up though at the USO in 2012 though,or maybe im missing something??….

Gypsy Gal Says:

Van Persie does he play for them then now?….

FedExpress Says:

nole was 2 stets down in the us open final in 2012 got it back to 2-2 . faked an injury when he was behind in the final set but didnt work

AndyMira Says:

Van Persie..i also got to ask you..do you like persie as a person or you’re one of the Arsenal fan?

Gypsy Gal Says:

AndyMira read 6.12am post….

Pauly Says:

Fed express
He faked an injury last year & it worked in Australian open
He’s good at that I notice

Pauly Says:

If Murray had won the second set
This match would’ve been a classic 5 setter
Pity

FedExpress Says:

not noles fault tbh that the calls on BPs werent called out but to say he gave murray no chance and dominated him is pathetic.

Van Persie Says:

Nope, he still plays for Arsenal, as far as I know, GG.
Andy Mira, like him only as a football player and person, am not an Arsenal fan. He’s like a panther ;)

danica Says:

Yeah right, faked injury. Haters are gonna hate no matter what. That’s pathetic.

Gypsy Gal Says:

I want Andy to win this match, but why is there so much hatred and anymosity for Novak, what hes doing in tennis at the moment is amazing?….

AndyMira Says:

Yeah GG..after i posted my thread..only then i realized van persie already answer your question..and i felt foolish after that..

Gypsy Gal Says:

Van Persie nope he left Arsenal for UTD some time ago, unless he went back there?….

FedExpress Says:

murrays FH is just

Van Persie Says:

yep: Fenerbahce now ;)

Gypsy Gal Says:

AndyMira no probs, and your not foolish…

Gypsy Gal Says:

Van Persie right thanks ;))….

FedExpress Says:

the last time nole beat some1 in the final in straights

i think it was 2011 at the AO and also think the first and last time

Pauly Says:

Danica

Not haters

It’s just the truth

Van Persie Says:

do not watch much football…but I like Van Persie. looks also very good;)

Pauly Says:

What Djokovic is doing now is dominating the declined players & the chokers
Federer
Nadal in decline

Murray choker weak mentally

AndyMira Says:

Van Persie..the other van persie play for fenerbache now..he leave arsenal club for man u 3 years ago..

FedExpress Says:

how many MTO’s does fed take when he loses the momentum?

look at the final set in the Wim final in 2014 after nole choked the 4th. he took a MTO for a leg injury. sure.

Pauly Says:

Give back Federer 6 years back
Give Nadal his speed back
Give Murray decent second serve
Let’s see how much dominating Djokovic can do ???

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Van Persie Says:

Nole deserved to win, agree with you, Danica!

Gypsy Gal Says:

Hi Danica, true haters will hate unfortunatly, but TennisGuy thinks im also some secret Nole hater, which im not ;))….

Pauly Says:

Fed express

Everything you say is spot on truth

FedExpress Says:

murray doing all the attacking and constructing the point to pull the trigger. nole only pushing and waiting for the error

AndyMira Says:

Gosh..my thread always came late..sorry van persie..

FedExpress Says:

and these DFs are called- hahhahahaha

FedExpress Says:

these linesmen are just useless

Gypsy Gal Says:

Van Persie true dat,Theiry Henry gets my vote on that though ;))….

Van Persie Says:

No problem, Andy Mira :)

Pauly Says:

Murray choking again

Gypsy Gal Says:

Shame to here the crowd cheering an error pftt….

Pauly Says:

2 double faults in tie breaker
If that isn’t choking
Then what is ???

Gypsy Gal Says:

This couldve been such a classic final, instead it was an error fest from Murray ;((….

AndyMira Says:

Pauly @ 6:27 am..i agree wholeheartedly with you but you know and i know that’s only wishful thinking..everybody have their moment in this life..and i believe this is novak’s moment..let him savour his moment..he deserve it..

van orten Says:

Congrats to all nole fans..may the world domination continue for the next 20 years.!!!! He is the best . No end in sight ..

Van Persie Says:

Congrats Nole! xxxxx

Gypsy Gal Says:

Van Orton lol….

AndyMira Says:

I can’t believe andy can’t steal a set from novak..oh..well..maybe next time andy..meanwhile let’s go fishing with rafa…amigo’s here i come..

FedExpress Says:

a player who made 100 ue in one match wins the tournament

AndyMira Says:

Hey CDP..are you there?

Van Persie Says:

Sorry for Murray and for all his fans, he did not show his best today.

Margot Says:

Many congratulations to Nole and his ace fans. Another jewel in his crown.
Getting very heavy now….;)
So disappointing from Andy
a)sleep walking through first set
b) so many times letting Nole off hook
c)going to pieces in the tie.
Certainly right tactics, most of the time, lol. But shite execution most of the time, especially forehand.
*Looks around for handy not Andy bandwaggon to hop onto*

Vinod Says:

what will CDP explain for this ?

FedExpress Says:

a player who cant hit a smash wins 11 slams

Travis Bickle Says:

Novak’s business like victory and 11th GS is sweet…
But way more sweeter is reading comments from bitter haters (exclusively Nadal and Federer fans) here, hahaha!
In your face folks! Suffer…

As for Murray fans (Margot, J-Kath & CDP), your guy fought to the bitter end – many a player would have quit after that second set and being down a break in the third. Not Muzza, he is a great guy!

Gypsy Gal Says:

Margot yeah spot on,Andy wasnt really in this match, dissapointing final :((….

blah Says:

this is what happens when a poor man’s djokovic plays djokovic. better start putting hope in raonic or some other young guy because this match-up wont change anytime soon

Vami Says:

Andy deserved a set, what a fighter. He made it tough for Novak, everybody else would just let it go.

Some real haters on this forum, most of the folks commenting here tonight during the match are plain awful. Thanks Danial and Danica for showing there’s some sane people out there.

Wog Boy Says:

Commiserations to real Andy’s fans and they who they are.

Thanks to all for congrats.

And for others (haters), go back and read Travis Bickle post, my message is the same as his…suffer..

jatin Says:

Just want to Congratulate Novak. What a player man, what a player. It just amaze me to see his incredible defense and the way he change his defense to offence. Love that pattern of play.
Bit sad for Andy though, he tried his best but it must suck to lose 5 aus open final. I hope one day he gets it.

11th slam. Sweet for Novak Fans. Just enjoy his incredible run guys.

I am looking forward to see more of Fed in Rotterdam. :)

Gypsy Gal Says:

I dont think Nadal and Federer fans have any right to feel bitter, after all one has 17 GS,and the other 14….

Anyway big congrats to the sensible Novak fans the Novak die hards on the forum,Wogboy,Mat4,Courbon,Jane,Jalep,Danica,Nikola etc, etc, cant remember them all,but they know who they are….

Commies to Margot and the Murray fans,Margot,J-Kath,The DA,Raquet etc etc,its indeed painful to watch a guy lose the same final five times :((….

van orten Says:

Congrats to nole and his ace fans . Fed fans are haters , rafa fans vanished and Murray fans need antidepressivas …so why not become all nole fans then ..makes life easier

Here really paying respect to the champion nole is. There will come other times and from my side at least there will be no hahahahaha …because it is just how tennis life works.. he will not win forever . And when it is due I will not hope he retires right away. Tennis is not only about winning ..ask 98 % of the other players…cheers and of course all the hate in the world ;)

FedExpress Says:

and the talk that novak will overtake fed starts again.

in this tournament he looked vulnerable, at the USO he looked vulnerable, at Wimb he looked vulnerable but everybody fall apart in front him

anderson i will never ever fotgive u

Vami Says:

Nice speeches form both of them.

Gypsy Gal Says:

11 GS Novak tying Laver and Borg what an achievement, funny when Nadal did the same he got very little credit for it,go figure….

blah Says:

and there’s the source of the bitterness. I guess fed fans don’t consider rafa a threat to dethrone him anymore? He is 3 slams closer.

FedExpress Says:

as it nows stand rafa has more chances to get to 17 than nole. novak has to reach 14 at first

Gypsy Gal Says:

Fedexpress you would think given that Rafa is closer to Roger than what Novak is, however going on recent form though you have to say Novaks in with the best chance, but its all speculation and not relevant unless/until it happens,so we will see what the future brings….

Pauly Says:

Fed express

It’s now time to forget about Rafa ‘s 14 slams Coz he won’t win anymore … Federer’s 17 will go in 3 years if no one can challenge Djokovic !
Someone needs to step up & challenge him Coz Federer is too old Rafa is too Injury prone Murray is a choker
Wawrinka too inconsistent … Who else can challenge ?
The Japanese puppet certainly can’t

18 slams for Djokovic in 2018 is my prediction

Gypsy Gal Says:

I said it before many Federer fans have Novak down as their second favorite, but if he gets past Rafa and closer to Rogers count i would be curious to see how they would react, and if they would go turncoat on Novak the way they did with Rafa,as the saying goes be carefull what you wish for??….

Wog Boy Says:

Nole has won 17 of his last 18 matches against top10 player!

van orten Says:

Does it really matter who ends up with more ?? Anyone ever considered how the h2h would be if fed retired after Wimby 2012 . I Thank god or my garden fairy he didn’t.
And I want rafa nole and Andy to keep on as long as they can …why retire when they are better than the rest anyways??

Van Persie Says:

It was his 18 final in a row also :)

Michael Says:

The 2016 Australian Open yet again underscored the brilliance of Mr. Consistent named Novak Djokovic as the undisputed Champion. And by this win, he created some new records as well. This is a record 6th Australian Open title and the first player in the Professional era to have accumulated so much crowns in his trophy cabinet. He also equals the Greats Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg with 11 Grand slam singles title and also is now close to overhauling Rafa. And the incredible run of 2015 continues in 2016 as well with a fantastic beginning and a good augury for Novak.

Even before the start of the match, very few were betting Andy to win this encounter and the odds were overwhelmingly loaded in favour of Novak to win the title. But there was this slimmer of chance where an upset was possible if only Novak’s level of play falters and conversely the level of Andy rises. But it turned out to be exactly the reverse with Andy making far too many Unforced Errors and insanely served two double faults in the third set break to gift the match to Novak. He just couldn’t cope up with the pressure of being in a 5th final and I would say wilted unable to counter the barrage of shots that was flowing freely from Novak who was outlasting him from the back of the court with some relentless hitting !!

blah Says:

of course they would. its already starting to happen. If Rafa starts winning again this hate will be redirected to the “injury faking steroid taking clay court specialist” ( I wonder why that hasnt come up in a while )

Fed fans should enjoy his last years and relax. 17 isnt that easy to get to.

Van Persie Says:

Van Orten, …all the respect and credit for Federer. Would you please be so kind to let us enjoy this victory??..I am polite now.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Michael i wonder if Novak surpasses Rafa then will he also be regarded as a failure like Rafa is then?….

Pauly Says:

It’s now time to start planning BECKER
Since you never win one single clay tournament
It won’t be easy to help Djokovic win the only major he wants
French open !
Don’t worry Nadal is no longer a threat
Either is Federer nor is Murray & forget about the puppet Nishikori … Only one man stands in Djokovic’s way
Stan the man Wawrinka !

But unless Djokovic can win the French open his greatness will always be questioned Coz to be a true great in tennis you must win all 4 majors

Michael Says:

And for Andy, it all ended so tragically and the Monkey is still on his back at Melbourne Park and he could not conquer the demons. Being in the 5th final and not winning one is a stinking feeling which Andy tried to conceal at the Presentation speech but couldn’t hide his disappointment for long and finished his speech with tears.

This is what his 10th Grand slam final and he has won only two and that means a very poor conversion rate of just 20 percent success and it was not just his day out there.

Nodoubt he fought back brilliantly in the third set having been outplayed in the first set and crumbled in the second set. He was broken in the beginning of the third set, but fought brilliantly and broke back to extend it to the tie breaker where he unfortunately served two double faults and gifted the match to Novak.

Neverthleless all the best to Andy and hope that one day he becomes a Champion at this venue and he deserves it for sure. But the condition is that he should not be meeting Novak in the finals.

Michael Says:

Alison @ 7.19 am,

I just cannot get you. What is really your point ?

van orten Says:

Van persie I will see nole in Dubai in 3 weeks from now …ajde!!! Lookin forward to seeing the Champ

danica Says:

Pauly,
“Japanese puppet”? Really?

Michael Says:

At such success rate, Novak has good chances to surpass even Roger !!

Tennisfan Says:

Damn I never realized this was Andy’s 9th final loss. I feel bad for him now, but I guess it can’t be helped when you’re playing in the eras of Rafa, Fed and Nole.

Pauly Says:

Danica

I just can’t help it … Nishikori looks like a puppet I once saw long ago … If it upsets you sorry but I’m not a fan of his at all

As for RAONIC ???
How would he have done tonight ?
He had Murray beaten until he did his groin sadly
In my opinion he would’ve pushed Djokovic much more
His serve is lethal

Gypsy Gal Says:

Michael put it this way he never has been given credit for his career achievements has he,it has always been how he dominated clay(the poor mans GS),ive said numerous times how hes won multiple GS on all sufaces,to which all falls on deaf ears, anyway its Novaks day CONGRATS….

Dave Says:

GG- I was referring to the French Open where Nole was up 2 sets to 0 and up a break in the 3rd set. Andy came back and at least took it to a 5th set. That was the last time they played each other in a grand slam.

Pauly Says:

Good luck to Nadal for 2016
May the WIZARD of OZ give him a Brain so he can get another coach … Look what Becker has done for Djokovic
Improved his serve for starters

Gypsy Gal Says:

Dave oh yeah sorry forgot that one….

danica Says:

I cannot understand how people can diminish Andy’s achievements and even call him a choker. He was a break down in both second and third set and yet he fought valiantly to get them back. He could have won both of those sets. Granted, he played some shaky TB but it happens even to the best of players. There was a lot going on in his life and honestly, how fully can you be committed to this final match if you’re wife is half a globe away and about to go into labor? Andy played well throughout the tournament and congratulations to him and his fans for going deep. He would have won against anyone else.

Happy for Nole of course. His doings are amazing. Some here are eating sour grapes because the commentators started speculating on whether he can catch Roger. But guys, don’t be afraid, those are really only speculations.

Congrats to my fellow Nole fans. And one more time, congrats to Andy and fans too because, reaching the AO final for the 5th time is no small feat.

Michael Says:

Alison,

Those who are undermining the performance of Rafa I would say are plain idiots. Sorry for being so harsh. But we have to give credit where it is due. Rafa is one of the Greatest Tennis players and is ranked amongst the iconic legends of the Sport. Let him not win a tournament from hereon, but can you still take away all his achievements that have done him proud as well as gave the Sport a Champion material. And I would still go on to say that his most greatest achievement is psychologically demoralizing Roger and getting the better of him with a lop sided H2H loaded in his favour.

Ofcourse, he has now slumped and not able to be consistent as he was in his hey days. And he has become vulnerable to even lower ranked players. But can that negate all his achievements so far that he has managed to amass on the Tennis circuit !?

Pauly Says:

Danica

How about winning one ?
Reaching means nothing
Winning is everything
No one remembers losers

Come on Danica make sense !

Gypsy Gal Says:

Danica if he does surpass Rafa and even Roger then he will deserve it,and personally i am cool with it anyway ;))….

Gypsy Gal Says:

Meant to say congrats to DAVE,and THANKS for all the good advice and links you gave me regarding my depression issue ;))…. CHEERS….

danica Says:

GG,
don’t pay attention to those who call you hater. You know better who you truly are. And the rest of us know as well that you are a balanced and objective, nice tennis fan.

As for Rafa, I agree. He is/was so incredibly dominant on clay that people forgot he won all the slams. He was a bit unlucky with injuries at the AO otherwise, he might have won more titles there. He was a great on all the surfaces. For some reason, he only underperformed in closed spaces and the Masters Cup. But nevertheless, he will always be one of the greatest ever.

Pauly Says:

He will pass Nadal next year
Then pass Roger in 2018
Djokovic might get 20 slams

8 Australian opens
2 French
5 Wimbledons
5 US opens

He will retire 2020 most likely

Gypsy Gal Says:

Michael can that negate all his achievements he managed on the tennis circuit?NO,but it doesnt seem to stop some people putting them down though….

danica Says:

Pauly,
I am merely making an argument against Andy being called a choker.

Michael Says:

Pauly,

20 majors might be a tall order. I would see the definite possibility of him supassing Roger atleast and end up with about 18 majors in toto !!

Pauly Says:

Who said I was a Djokovic hater when I’m from his country
I just been Nadal fan all my life but now coming to terms with the fact that he is washed up

Gypsy Gal Says:

Thankyou Danica,i feel the same about you too, anyway its Novaks day and his fans ENJOY ;))….

danica Says:

Nice of you guys to believe in Nole winning a thousand slams, but let him first win #12 ;)

Gypsy Gal Says:

Michael to add, even his own fans….

Noonen Says:

Novak just beat Andy. Yay, Nole! But, my dear boy, please don’t say you make children. Only Jesus gives life.

Michael Says:

Alison @ 7.44 am,

There will always be dissenters howsoever a Great player one may be. But can such individual opinion decide the status of a player in sport ? The truth is that it is only determined through his achievements and what he offers on the table. So, I request you not to take such criticism very severely and just be proud of the achievements of your favourite player !!

danica Says:

GG, thanks ;)

Pauly Says:

Michael

If Djokovic doesn’t get injured he can get 18 slams before he retires ?
Maybe that’s more sensible prediction
But all I want is for my favourite player to win one more slam if that’s not asking for too much ?

Dave Says:

Your Welcome GG. I am happy the links helped you.

Gypsy Gal Says:

MICHAEL CHEERS ;))….

Michael Says:

Pauly,

18 is certainly achievable for Novak at this going rate. But the key is that he must stay injury free for that to happen.

The unlucky Andy ofcourse can win another slam, but only if Novak is not at the other end of the net. I think he has lost his confidence against Novak completely. Earlier, he used to trouble him and there were many close matches between these two players. But now a days Andy is struggling to even take a set off Novak and their matches are mostly one sided including this one.

Michael Says:

Thank you Alison !!

Bob Lewis Says:

The tournament in Melbourne has come to an end
Men’s tennis, Novak continues to transcend
A validation of experts’ picks
This was Aussie title number six
Andy battled and tried his best
But Nole is better than all the rest
Another victory, what a sight to see
The Serb is dominant and gluten free
There’s no mercy for any foe
Now he will go for four in a row
Roland Garros is his next exam
A win completes the Nole Slam
Might as well go play some poker
There’s no stopping the mighty Djoker!

Dave Says:

Nole is so driven to take tennis to a higher level than ever before and continue to take it higher and higher. I didn’t think he could break the record for most majors last year. After the match today and seeing how determined he is, I really do believe he can do it and break other records as well. With every major he wins, he looks more and more determined to do it. With Rafa, I never felt like he was chasing the record for grand slams. He was never really vocal about his intentions of breaking the record. Nole has been vocal about it and seems more determined and focused to break it.

sisay Says:

Congratulation s to all novak fans…and comis for all andy fans. Novak showed us what he is capable of doing whan he plays his a game in the first set…in the 2nd and 3rd he took his foot off the pedal and make it look like a competitive much. What i take from this final is that novaks c game is enough to beat andy…but sorry no offence just my opinion…

Van Persie Says:

Van Orten, enjoy your vacation in Dubai…and do no stay to much in the sun, might cause you some damages ;)

roy Says:

gilles simon should get the runner up. he’s the only one who created any real drama.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Roy the Murray/Raonic match was good too….

Wog Boy Says:

@roy,

Good one:)

Wog Boy Says:

@sisay,

Are you by any chance Serbian, or of Serbian backround?;)

J-Kath Says:

Congrat to Nole and fans Wogboy, Jane, Courbon and the many others. (At least I’m glad Andy didn’t repeat set 1…).

Bob Lewis….well done….hope Nole fans will add it to their scrap books.

Thanks to kind mentions from GG, Vami, Travis, Danica, etc.

And to Margot….what the heck was he doing up at 1.00am before a big match? His big bro. can take care of himself. If his match had gone to 4 or 5 sets his legs would have dropped off. Ah well….baby time now.

sisay Says:

Wog boy…no i aint a Serbian i am an Ethiopian…but why u asked please…

Wog Boy Says:

sisay,
Just asking, good to know you are Ethiopian, we have quite a bit in common.

Daniel Says:

Have Federer not played that incredible game to break Novak in third set, Djoko would have won last 3 matches in straight sets.

I said that now he is entering a phase were he is winning easier. Expect him to complete the Djoko Slam and hold for at once in RG. That wiuld be super sweet for him crwoning for good hos last year. After that, maybe even the Golden Slam as Graffi did.

With this major guarantee minimum 2 for the year, most likelly 3 again or even all 4. He is in the driver seat for much mpre greatness. Right now Roger’s 17 still looks safe but depend of Djoko enda this year with 13 or 14, achievable in 2018. Plus he can now chase the Number 1 recorda as well. Tying Fed with 5 Year End and going after Sampras 6 next year. Plus 200+ weeks as number 1 a given now.

And how many more straight finals willhe reach?! Amazing stuff. So far this year is better than 2015 for him, undefeated!!

madmax Says:

hought Andy put up a valiant fight in the second and third set. Obviously disappointment.

Brilliant Novak however. Just in-the-zone.

Here is something for you Gypsy, if you see this. The closing ceremony, 2012, Rafa and Novak, how they could hardly stand after the longest tennis match in Australian history.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2016/jan/31/novak-djokovic-v-andy-murray-australian-open-final-live

and was posted just after the match today – for rafa and novak fans. :)

chrisford1 Says:

FedExpress Says:
as it nows stand rafa has more chances to get to 17 than nole. novak has to reach 14 at first.
===============
It may not be about Slam Count. Things could happen that count as much or more than Slam Count. Like a Grand Slam, even a Calendar year one.

madmax Says:

Daniel,

You need to speak for yourself about the safety of Federer’s slams, because we have been here before but discussed the ‘threat’ of Nadal.

I said back then, wouldn’t it shut everyone up with the Fed/Nadal debate and who is the greatest of them all if Novak overtook.

And he might. So once again, Federer, for me, will always be the greatest tennis player ever and if Novak surpasses 17, then good luck to him and he will be regarded as the Greatest of all time.

No question.

Giles Says:

Jeez! NO NO NO JUST NO SERBIAN GOATS PLEASE!
πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–πŸ˜–

Gypsy Gal Says:

I dont know why we cant just enjoy tennis, and the idea of having a number of all time greats, why do we even have to have a GOAT?….

Daniel Says:

Yeah madmax,

It’s only safe now because he is still 6 away from it,which is a lot, even with him winning last 3 or 5 of the lats 7. If he keeps this pace he could have 16 by the time 2017 end.

But once again, we never know when they will win their last or when things will slow down.

Fed had won 3 of the last 4 Slams after AO 2010, won only 1 more after that and he was 28/29.

Nadal won 3 of the last 5 Slams after RG 2014 when he was 27/28 and so far didn’t won any of the next 7 he played.

Novak will turn 29 during RG and although he seems as fit as ever and at the top of his games it’s an age things start decreasing a bit, even if he will be the outsider of the norm, prolonging his career.
He is also battling time now as he will enter the “third phase” of his career as a veteran when he himself was surprised last year by a reporter. It hits them out of nowhere.

If he achieves it or not it will be a joy to follow, Right now I want to see him win 4 in a row and complete his set with RG. Something Fed and Nadal failed before. Want to see it in my lifetime and I bet we won’t have many more chances to witness it. Djoko seems the perfect candidate for it (more complete game and no weakness adjusted for all surfaces) and the timing is also on his side (Fedal on the downside and Murray’s confidence against him shaken for good).
