Countryman Marco Chiudinelli made Stan Wawrinka work in the first round in Basel today before the 3-time Grand Slam champion and tournament top seed prevailed 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-4.

“It was a tough physical and mental battle,” Wawrinka said. “It was a huge fight with Marco, he was playing at home and had the crowd on his side.

“It was so tough to beat him here. He played great and I had to fight, I needed to work hard to find a winning solution.

“The third set was so tight, I’m just very content to get past the first round. I’ll prepare for Thursday and hope to go further in the tournament. The most important thing was to win this match.”

Stan had lost the first round in his last four visits to Basel before today’s win. He’ll face Donald Young on Thursday.

No. 5 seed David Goffin also advance ousting Marcos Baghdatis.

Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic was shocked by qualifier Ricardis Berankis 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and Grigor Dimitrov fell to Gilles Muller 6-7(9), 6-4, 6-4.

On tap Wednesday, Kei Nishikori returns to take on Paolo Lorenzi and Richard Gasquet meets Guido Pella. Juan Martin del Potro is also in action against Robin Haase.
