Wawrinka Reaches Basel QFs; Del Potro v Nishikori Friday

Stan Wawrinka toughed his was into the Basel quarterfinals beating American qualifier Donald Young 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 6-4. Wawrinka will now face improving qualifier Mischa Zverev.

Juan Martin del Potro avenged an earlier loss in Shanghai to David Goffin, turning the tables with a 7-5, 6-3 win over the Belgian.

“I played well in the big moments. I broke his serve once in each set, and that was enough to win today,” said del Potro

The win puts him into a tasty Friday quarterfinal against Kei Nishikori who he has beaten in all four previous meetings.

“[Kei] is so fast and so aggressive with his backhand. My game has changed since my [wrist] injury but if I serve well, I have a chance to win,” del Potro said.

Another US Open champion advanced as Marin Cilic was a 6-0, 7-6 winner over Pablo Carreno Busta. He’ll face Marcel Granollers who crushed Jack Sock losing just three games.
