Murray Wins In 3, Meets Simon Next In Vienna; Khachanov Advances
It was a battle for two sets before former champion Andy Murray blew out Martin Klizan in the third for a 6-3, 6-7, 6-0 win over the Slovakian in Vienna. It was Murray’s 11th straight win and the first set loss during this streak.
Murray will now meet Frenchman Gilles Simon who he leads 15-2 in their head-to-head.
The winner of Murray-Simon will face John Isner on Friday. The American dispatched Feliciano Lopez in a final set tiebreaker. Fellow big man Ivo Karlovic did the same in beating Damir Dzhumer. The Croat overcame a 5-1 third set deficit to claim the victory.
20-year-old phenom Karen Khachanov continued his rise ousting Nikolaz Basilishvili 6-2, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals.
On Thursday, the second round completes with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga taking on Philipp Kohlschreiber, Joao Sousa battles David Ferrer and also home favorites Dominic Thiem and Jurgen Melzer are in action.
