While Novak Djokovic enjoyed a straightforward win in his opener, Juan Martin del Potro had to go the distance to set up a tasty second round showdown tonight in Acapulco against the Serb.

Del Potro had to fight hard to deny 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1), winning seven of the last eight points of the match.

In his Acapulco debut, Djokovic overcame a 4-2 deficit int he second in a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over Martin Klizan.

“I wasn’t expecting an easy match, that’s for sure,” Djokovic said. “I haven’t played an official tour match since Australia, one Davis Cup only.

“Overall it was a good performance. It was a tough second set, up and down. It’s exactly what I needed in this moment to test myself and my game.”

Djokovic leads del Potro 11-4 but the Argentine won their last meeting at the Rio Olympics last summer.

“He deserved all the success he’s had, especially because the past couple of years he was not playing much because of injury,” Djokovic said. “He brings excitement to tennis because he has a big game, a big serve. He’s somebody we can call a big-match player.”

The two will meet at 10pm local time in Acapulco tonight.

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal rolled in his opener beating Mischa Zverev 6-4, 6-3. Nadal faces Paolo Lorenzi later today.

Nick Kyrgios and Dominic Thiem were also winners. Yoshihito Nishioka upset Jack Sock.

Matt Ford Says:

Del Po struggled big time last time out but was obviously rusty.

He seems to have a mental edge over Novak though whenever they meet.

I was shocked to find these odds with Novak such a big favorite. Del Po seems more than worth a punt here : https://sports.ladbrokes.com/en-gb/betting/tennis/abierto-mexicano-telcel/mens-singles/novak-djokovic-v-juan-martin-del-potro/223384722/

AndyMira Says:

This match sure to be a cracker! It’s really a shame it happen in early stages…Novak seems still not at his best but i think he will win today….maybe in 3…If not, that’s okay..try again next time..Good luck guys!!C’mon bring it on!!!

Van Persie Says:

Am glad, that Nole decided to play agressivel today. Started really good, hope he will keep it that way. He hit some beautiful FH winners.

kjb Says:

Nice first set from Delpo. Crushing the forehand, serving really good. Novak has played good in spurts.

FedExpress Says:

delpo choking

Van Persie Says:

Ok, we will finally have a Djoko – Kyrgios match.

FedExpress Says:

delpo has to improve his serve.

he had the break in the 3rd but his serve let him down.

Danica Says:

I believe it was Novak who needs to improve his serve. It let him down more than I care to count. Also, I always cringe when he is about to do the overhead.

All in all, I am liking what I am seeing. And strange as it may sound, I for once enjoyed his heart/soul sharing with the audience :).

Van Persie Says:

Hoping for DelPO to get in the top 10 asap. I am tired to see Djoko- DelPo matches in the early rounds :)

courbon Says:

Danice, I could not agree more-his serve is still liability-easily broken. But, I’m sure he has a shoulder problem for a long time, so hopefuly it will improve with the time. And then there is a mental aspect to his game-that only he can switched on-and today his attitude was not bad at all.
Overheads? Seriously, I think even I can do better… (-:

courbon Says:

VP-Tired or anoyed?

Van Persie Says:

Courbon,

Both, I guess :)

courbon Says:

VP, I know…is very anoying having Delpo in earlier rounds…

Van Persie Says:

hehe, Courbon… and Kyrgios the kid tomorrow, ..who did not play a long match today…and will be determined to give his best tomorrow, I expect. lol

Wog Boy Says:

How does the court look like, fast, low (high) bounce? What was the fan reaction during the match?

Wog Boy Says:

“He seems to have a mental edge over Novak though whenever they meet.”

Sure, you can see that in their h2h results, very close, 12:4 in Nole’s favor;)

Wog Boy Says:

^^^ though to honest since FO everyone has mental edge over Nole…Istomin, Querrey…you name them :)

Van Persie Says:

WB,

I have watched only the 1 set, and not till the end cause I had to prepare myself for work.
The courts seemed slower to me…
Crowds cheered for both, during the 1 set at least….but I did not see the entire match.

Van Persie Says:

^^ but then, the humidity from Acapulco adds it’s impact on court.

Wog Boy Says:

Thanks VP, yes, Tomic complained that he was tired due to hot weather when he quit after first set and it was only 27 degrees (and he was raised and still trains in Gold Coast where is hot and humid, but then he turned up few hours later to play doubles, he can’t help himself to make an idiot of himself, can he? :)

Van Persie Says:

You’re welcome , WB.

Well, Tomic is Tomic. He does not surprise me anymore.:)

courbon Says:

VP: In a way match against Delpo is a good preparation for Kyrgower play, so who knows…

WB: Court looks slow, hence lots of breaks of serves…
Tell me abouth mental edge;;I think my 11 year daughter has mental edge over Novak right now…but we can always hope Novak will come back, no? ( this “no?” is pronuouced like Nadal does it )

Wog Boy Says:

We certainly hope courbon, no?

courbon Says:

Si amigo, si…

Wog Boy Says:

Si hombre, si…

courbon Says:

WB-Quick mental test for you:
Who’s better -Zagor or Kapetan Mark?
Who is better Zalosna Sova or Profesor Okultis?

Wog Boy Says:

Zagor i Zalosna Sova

Wog Boy Says:

But Sir Oliver is the best.

courbon Says:

WB-Agree on Zagore but Okultist beats Zalosna Sova any time.Anyway I let you pass the test.
Sir Oliver? Absolutelly…
halo Bing, kako brat?
Anyway, I better go and do some work.Speak to you later.

Truth Says:

Djoko loses serves like he loses one-way arguments with Jelena. It doesn’t matter if the court is slow.
