The groups for the upcoming WTA Finals were announced earlier today in Singapore. The event begins on Sunday.

World No. 1 Simona Halep leads the Red group which includes rival Elina Svitolina, the red hot Caroline Garcia and former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. None of the four players have won a Slam before.

The White Group, which opens the tournament on Sunday, features three former Grand Slam champions in Garbine Muguruza, Venus Williams and French winner Jelena Ostapenko.

Venus is the lone former champion in the field, and just three players – Halep, Muguruza and Pliskova – return from last year’s event. Three players – Garcia, Svitolina and Ostapenko – are making their WTA finals.

With as many as 1,500 ranking points to the winner, 7 of the 8 players in the event have a shot at the year-end No. 1 ranking, only Garcia is out of the mix.

RZ Says:

Unless Garcia continues her hot streak, I don’t see how Halep doesn’t win the red group.

AndyMira Says:

Simona really got a tough competition in her group…Elina must be very motivated to add to her 6th? title this season…And Garcia also feel very confident after bagged 2 titles B2B in China a while ago…And Caro with 1 title & 6 final also cannot be dismissed…Her No 1 title sure will give her an extra pressure too…

What’s more..7 from 8 contender will have a big chance to go home with No 1 ranking at the end of the tournament if they’re doing really well in Singapore….Woooo!!

So…Honestly,i think it’s a really really tough task indeed for No 1 Simona in Singapore next week…Tho,i really really like her and want her to win & cling to her No 1 for much longer….but..the reality is very harsh…it’s very interesting to see how well she handle this pressure…

Willow Says:

IMO Like last year, no Serena field wide open, i could see any one of them winning this, defending champion Cibulkova missing this year ….

Humble Rafa Says:

It’s interesting that they don’t call the women’s year end event WTF. I am sure it’s for political correctness. WTF could mean a lot of things to a lot of people.
