Kvitova, Muguruza Winners At WTA Finals Singapore; Sharapova, Halep Seeks SFs Thursday
Mono-stricken Petra Kvitova got on the board Wednesday at the WTA Finals Singapore beating compatriot Lucie Safarova 7-5, 7-5.
“I’m really glad that I was able to play and win that kind of match after my loss in the first match here,” Kvitova said.
Kvitova is now 1-1 in the White Group round robin with one match to play. Kvitova will test Garbine Muguruza Friday while Safarova takes on Angelique Kerber.
Later, Muguruza beat Kerber 6-4, 6-4 to stay perfect in her first Finals events.
“Every time I step on the court against Angelique I know it’s going to be difficult, so I just have to give my best if I’m going to get the victory,” Muguruza said.
On tap Thursday, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep will look to clinch semifinal berths. Sharapova faces US Open champion Flavia Pennetta. Halep will meet Agnieszka Radwanska.
All four Red Group players are still alive for the semifinals.
