On a day of blowouts at the Singapore WTA Finals, former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki destroyed Elina Svitova 6-2, 6-0 and Simona Halep routed Caroline Garcia 6-4, 6-2.

“I think I played really well and I served well and stayed aggressive,” Wozniacki said. “It was close, especially in the beginning.

“I think I just kind of broke her down a little bit. Then I think she lost the belief or she tried to go a little bit more for it. You know, she just couldn’t find a break or find a way to break me.”

It was Svitolina’s debut in the event.

“This court is very, very slow,” Svitolina said. “Today I completely lost my rhythm after a couple of games and was all over the place. Was feeling very, very bad on court today.

“I will try just to forget this day and play my next match like nothing happen and try to find the way to come back.”

Halep and Garcia had just played in the Wuhan final a few weeks ago. This time Halep turned the tables.

“Definitely she’s very difficult to play against, and I knew how it’s going to be,” said Halep. “Because we played two weeks ago. But also I had in my mind the match from Toronto when I won against her, and today I think I played similar to that match.”

“I just felt that in the beginning, she’s very consistent and very strong, but then in the second set already I started to feel that I dominate the match and I got more confidence.”

On Tuesday in the White Group, Venus Williams and Jelena Ostapenko meet to try to stay in the semifinal hunt. After, former No. 1s Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova battle to go up 2-0 in the group.

Venus leads the Latvian 1-0 beating her at this past Wimbledon while Pliskova has a 6-2 edge on Muguruza though the Spaniard won most recently in Cincinnati.

Ostaneko’s opening round loss has eliminated her from No. 1 contention, but Venus still has a chance, however she must win the title.

Venus is the lone former champion in the field.

Van Persie Says:

Crazy Venus! Did not expect her to win the match after the loss of the 2nd set.

Margot Says:

A match of high intensity if not high quality but Venus really turned up the heat in the last two games. Guess she’ll be knackered now however.
Two things I wish for Jelena, for the love of God sort out your serve and please stop behaving like wee diva on court.
Courts are slow and will probably favour Halep and Woz and did see Halep playing beautifully against Garcia whose inexperience showed and who did look like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

gonzalowski Says:

Pliskova, crushing Muguruza

Van Persie Says:

My new fave is Muguruza, rooted for her…

Margot,

Yep Halep should love the court, perhaps she will play 1-2 more good matches and lose afterwards. That’s her pattern :)
Agree about Penko…hate those grimasses. Behaves like a 5 years old child. With an improved 2 serve she would be a killer. Would like to see a Serena-Penko match, with both in good shape.

Pamela Says:

Where are you all watching the matches on? I’m in the states and at least yesterday I don’t think they showed any on the tennis channel. There is a channel that starts with a B (on my lineup it is directly under the tennis channel) which shows all the women’s matches.. I guess I need to upgrade….

Try here which is where I’m watching but dunno if available in the states.

Margot Says:

Sorry Pamela just tried that link but you can’t use it any more. Should be somewhere on youtube however.

Margot: What about Eurosport….might be OK in States. ??
Haven’t really been trying to watch at moment….will do eventually- being pulled in too many directions at moment. I do check what’s been happening am and again pm on results.

Margot Says:

You can’t get Eurosport in the US. Besides YouTube is free. Andy Mira posted a link earlier today. She can probably help.

Humble Rafa Says:

I wonder what an aggressive Wozy looks like.
