Naomi Osaka’s Indian Wells Victory Speech Was A Joy [Video]
If you haven’t seen it, it was the story of the women’s final. That being Naomi Osaka’s victory speech after cruising past Daria Kasatkina to win Indian Wells.
It was the 20-year-old’s first title of any kind, and after the match during her acceptance speech, you could tell the youngster was at a loss for words. But it was thoroughly raw and refreshing.
“Well, the thing is I prepared and everything, and I knew what I was going to say in which order,” Osaka said of the speech. “But then when he called me, I freaked out. And then I just started saying whatever came into my mind first, which is why I think I kept, like, stopping halfway through my sentences, because I just remembered something else I had to say. So, yeah, that was pretty embarrassing.”
Osaka won the title dropping just one set. She beat No. 1s Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova plus Agnieszka Radwanska. However, in the morning, her routine was almost blown because of toast!
“Usually in the morning I eat the same breakfast, like, every time,” Osaka said. “But then today they brought me sourdough toast instead of wheat. I freaked out a little bit, but I still ate it. And then I was thinking, if I lose this match because of the sourdough toast, I’m going to be really upset.”
And her reward in Miami? She’ll open against… Serena Williams later this week!
