The US Open begins with a bang on Monday with a monster 64-match schedule. Among the names are world No. 1s Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep plus many more champions including US Open winners Serena and Venus Williams, Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Murray, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Sloane Stephens and Victoria Azarenka.

With Louis Armstrong debuting a roof, the Ashe schedule has been reduced from three matches during the day to two, thus almost virtually assuring an on-time 7pm start to the night schedule while also cutting down on the congestion outside of Ashe as night ticket holders wait to get in.

And day one on Ashe will feature four US Open past champions. Louis Armstrong had five Slam champions with four of them winning in New York.

Also on Monday, on Grandstand Denis Shapovalov meets fellow Canadian teen Felix Auger-Aliassime who is making his Grand Slam debut.

45 Comments for Monday US Open Schedule: Nadal, Serena, Venus, Wawrinka v Dimitrov Headline

Margot Says:

Number so beefy v part time playboy, first round! Eek 😞😁😲

Margot Says:

Aah not so beefy! Damn predictive text 😵

Daniel Says:

Wawa x Dimi should be a cracker. Whoever wins that will get a major boost and than play Raonic in 3rd. Actually the winner could very well play semis as we don’t know DelPo fitness status for sure and Coric also not that reliable to go far.

Mystic - Willow Says:

It was the exact same first round match as Wimbledon, i just think Stan needs it more, hope he has a good run, go Stan ….

Mystic - Willow Says:

Just not against Murray, go Andy lol ….

j-kath Says:

Read some obscene figures – look away now…..it’s about filthy lucre:

Andy M. has earned £47.33 million as of 2017.
Rafa has earned £140.00 million – same period.
Novak has earned £140.13 million for same period.
Roger has earned £86.41 over the years to same period. (seems odd given his age vs. others???).

However, they only give smatterings re. endorsements but do mention Roger’s recent endorsement with Uniglo which is worth £233 million over 10 years. So what does that say? He intends to play tennis for another 10 years? or he will still be involved with tennis for that period….coaching? exhibitions? etc. etc.

It was two different articles and I’ll copy for anyone interested if you want.

RZ Says:

Just a few hours to go to join the Racket Bracket! https://www.tourneytopia.com/RacquetBracketUsOpenATP/TennisXers2018USO/default.aspx

Thanks to those who have joined so far. We are missing some regulars though. :-(

Gonzalowski – where are you? I hope you didn’t quit on us!

AndyMira Says:

RZ!….A FEW HOURS???Really??Why on TDC it says 20 minutes left? Not that it bothers me coz i already finish it!..Hehehe…

RZ Says:

Sorry AM – I was getting my time zones mixed up (I’m a few hours behind on the west coast). But as you said, no need to worry for those of us who already entered!

AndyMira Says:

Hehehe…That’s alright RZ!…It’s already started!…But my pick winner Simona is down 1 set to kanepi now…Urgh!!…NO NO NO NO!!

RZ Says:

Ugh AM. I’m glad I didn’t enter a women’s pool. I would have picked Simona too! Let’s see if she can get out of this.

RZ Says:

Wow I guess not. Too bad for Simona. Tough 1st round draw 2 years in a row, but I thought she was going to go all the way this year.

Margot Says:

AM: Out goes Halep, crikey! :0

AndyMira Says:

RZ,M!…..My WTA Bracket ruined in a first match & in a first hrs!…Waaaaaa!!!

Van Persie Says:

Halep going out may be a good omen for Nole. Since clay season, when she did bad, he did well :)

RZ Says:

Here are some Racket Bracket stats:
Of the 16 entries, all 16 of us chose Rafa to reach the semis.13 chose Djokovic and Cilic to reach the semis. 8 chose DelPo and only 3 chose Federer. (the other players chosen to reach the semis are Isner, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Tsitsipas, A. Zverev, and Murray.

Only 4 players were picked to make the final: Nadal (15/16 picked him), Djokovic (13), Federer (3), and DelPo (1).

8 entrants chose Djokovic to win the whole tournament. 7 chose Nadal, and 1 chose Federer.

BBB Says:

Ah Halep.

I had doubts about her playing Cincy after Toronto.

j-kath Says:

What the heck does Grigor think he’s “up to” or rather “not up to”?

Daniel Says:

Damm it, why do I keep picking Dimi in my brackets, why?!?!?!

BBB Says:

It’s just odd that Dimitrov can rarely (pretty much never) really get it together.

Van Persie Says:

Want Stan to win, but expected Dimi to be prepared.

Daniel Says:

Kachanov had a impressive win, let’s see what he’ll bring vs Nadal, lastt ime he could force a breaker, maybe wins a set now.

RZ Says:

Dammit Andy, losing the 1st set 7-5 in a tiebreak. :-(

Margot Says:

Does that mean you’re watching RZ? Tsk. Tsk!…;)
Takes 2nd and looks a lot less crocked than at Cincy. Early days however.

j-kath Says:

Margot:
Looks a lot less crocked than Cincy…..Andy?

RZ Says:

M – I’ve been in meetings all day. Checked the score right after the first set, and just turned on the TV now to see that our guy had just won. Woohoo!

Giles Says:

Daniel Daniel Daniel. Always soooooo interested in Nadal!!

Margot Says:

Of course Andy, Kath. Thought he looked a lot better than Cincy all round. Lots of great Andy ROARS and fist pumps too! And now he gets a days rest.
Verdasco looks dangerous tho so who knows. Thought he’d go out to JMDP but might not get that far.
And the lovely play boy player goes out by way of Stan. “What a surprise,” said no-one.

Mystic - Willow Says:

well done Andy, baby steps first ….

j-kath Says:

Thanks Margot. Yes, sometimes some match-ups are difficult and Verdasco is known for making Andy work very hard against him – remember a Wimbledon when V, & his training group were grinning at the end of 2 winning sets for V. – Andy did manage to take it but was some work-out.

Expect lovely, now, not so young boy player, to rush into marriage and/or change his coaching team asap. or both. Dani, recently married, has probably given up.

AndyMira Says:

Giles!…R u watchin Rafa now??What’s that colour?Grey/blue/blue black?Oh!Whatever!….Sleeveless Rafa time!!….Woohooo!!

Daniel Says:

AM, I think is grey petroleum. Love the color!

Ferrer is actually playing decent, but Nadal is on fire, looking like finalist for sure. His BH is on from the get go. No slow start at all.

AndyMira Says:

Daniel!….Grey petroleum?Oh!Thanks for the info Daniel!…

About Rafa…Hopefully he will go to the final once again this year Daniel…Yeah! No slow start like usual…But Ferrer looks to break him in the 2nd sets now!

AndyMira Says:

Hehehe….There!Break!!…Let’s see how long Ferrer can hold this…

Daniel Says:

Ferrer broke and was leading 4-3 serve but had to retire.

Nadal getting broken 2 times in second set, kind of odd after his strong start.

AndyMira Says:

Daniel…I don’t think it’s that odd…I’m pretty sure Rafa got distracted with Ferrer’s conditions…U know, his injury & USO also is his last slam…As we all know, they both r good friends…I think,it’s very hard for Rafa to accept the fact that he’s the one who ended David’s last campaign at Slam…

I kinda noticed too, there’s no spring in Rafa’s step tonight either..or his body language not as enthusiastic like usual…

FedExpress Says:

Nadal lucky as usual.

Colin Says:

A note on Noo Orlins French.
The correct pronunciation for the rebuilt court is LEWIS Armstrong.
Listen to any of Satchmo’s numerous recordings of “Hello Dolly” and note how he(born in NO) pronounces his own name. Even American commentators often get it wrong.

j-kath Says:

Ah, sad to see the wee tiger with the big heart depart. He has been stoic and committed throughout his career – All the best for the future David.

j-kath Says:

RZ: at 12.45pm. Many thanks for your interesting summary of the Men’s Bracket. A little surprised at the lack of belief re. Roger.

Mystic - Willow Says:

J-Kath why dont you do the bracket too ?

Mystic - Willow Says:

RZ Yeah shame about Gonzo :-(

j-kath Says:

Mystic-W: It would take me a year to figure placements – and am paranoid about too many computer connections et al…

Mystic - Willow Says:

J-Kath i can understand that, the internet can be a funny thing, alot of hackers and scammers, i do enjoy chatting on FB but i can understand why some people are wary of it, to be honest the only reason i set up an account on there was because the camps i go to sell their tickets on there, and i chat to Andi-Mira and Okie on there ….
