The top-seeded Goerges in the Luxembourg final defeated Swiss qualifier Belinda Bencic 6-4, 7-5.

“Belinda had a great week and a great effort this week, coming through qualifying to make the final,” Goerges said on court afterwards. “She’s been in the Top 10 and I know how tough it is to get there.”

Bencic rose to No. 37 on the WTA rankings, and was appearing in her first final since losing at St. Petersburg in 2016. She dropped to 2-5 in career finals.

“It’s not a surprise that she’s a Top 10 player,” Bencic said of Goerges. “Today, I think she was just too good and serving too well. This tournament is so special for me because it was my first WTA tournament when I was 14 years old, and the next year when I was 15, in the main draw.”

Goerges, who has peaked at No. 9 on the WTA rankings, is now at No. 14. The 29 year old improved to 2-1 in 2018 finals and 6-8 career.
