Fognini, Coric, Shapovalov Rome Winners; Cilic, Wawrinka Tues
The young Canadians had a mixed day in Rome on Monday as Denis Shapovalov scored a terrific win beating Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 7-6(5); however, his friend and countryman Felix Auger-Aliassime fell to Borna 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4.
In the evening Fabio Fognini thrilled the home crowd crushing former Top 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4.
““To play first round against Jo – really tough match, because of course he was injured. He had surgery on the knee. He tried to recover his best performance, but at the same time I knew that it could be really dangerous,” Fognini said. “I’m happy, of course, happy because especially for me here, it’s always tough to play. But I’m happy about my performance, happy to be again in the second round in Roma.”
Former French semifinalist Marco Cecchinato also put up a good win for the Italians as he beat Alex De Minaur 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Gael Monfils fell apart in a disappointing 6-3, 6-1 beatdown loss to Alberto Ramos Vinolas.
Karen Khachanov collected a rare win by defeating in-form Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-3.
Fernando Verdasco and Casper Ruud also advanced.
Some of the higher seeds debut Tuesday as Marin Cilic meets Andrea Basso. Daniil Medvedev collides with Nick Kyrgios in the men’s match of the day. And former champion Alexander Zverev opens play against the dangerous Italian and Budapest champ Matteo Berrettini.
2008 finalist Stan Wawrinka battles David Goffin as well. Wawrinka leads 3-1 but the two have never met on clay.
