Djokovic Downs Dolgopolov In Rome; Berdych v Shapovalov Tues.
by Staff | May 14th, 2018, 10:27 pm

Novak Djokovic got back to playing his brand of tennis Monday in his Rome opener, crushing Alexander Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-3.

Though the Ukraine has been limited by injury this year, Djokovic was sharp all around, especially with his serve losing just 11 points total on his delivery.

“It was a great start. I always feel very comfortable in Rome. I think the conditions are quite suitable to my game,” Djokovic said. “I always look forward to coming back to Rome.”

“The last three, four weeks have been better on the practice courts and in matches,” Djokovic added. “Today’s match encourages me to move forward and hopefully I can get a few more matches in Rome than I have in the last couple months.”

Djokovic has made the Rome finals the last two years, and an early loss this week would send him farther down the rankings.

Looking for more wins, Djokovic awaits the qualifier battle between Nikoloz Basilashvili and Filippo Baldi.

Kei Nishikori edged by Feliciano Lopez in straight 7-6(5), 6-4.

“It wasn’t easy match,” said Nishikori. “It was windy and he used a lot of slice and great serves.

“Luckily I [won the] first set and after that I was more confident and I was playing better tennis.”

Next for Nishikori is Grigir Dimitrov on Wednesday.

Philipp Kohlschreiber beat Karen Khachanov for a second time this year in a final set breaker. On a good day for Italians, Fabio Fognini cruised past a returning Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-1.

Tomorrow, the action is headlined by Tomas Berdych battling Madrid semifinalist Denis Shapovalov. Marin Cilic, Lucas Pouille and Jack Sock are also in action.

WTH Staff?
Did you write it from a phone while running to catch a plane at the Atlanta Airport? ;)

Coric vs Tsitsipas good match today, too.

Daniel Says:

I want to believe he is getting better week by week and could peak druign the RG-USO stretch. Let’s see. Skeptical towards him this next motnhs.

But, tennis is a what have you done for me lately sport. So, things can change pretty quick.

Zverev now in a hot streak and if he wins Rome he will be one of the favorites for RG, after NAdal off course. Nadal can lose first round in Rome and nothing will change for RG.

Testing the waters. Am I allowed to start chewwing?

Hehehe, wrong spelling already.

There goes the media-proclaimed second best player on clay in a laughable effort to generate some interest in this boring clay court season.

I like watching Fognini, very emotional. Thiem on the other hand only shows the emotion of fear and doubt when the going gets rough. His best strokes when it was tight was the highly charged racket smashing, second to none.

RZ Says:

Ugh. Fognini is fun to watch but personality-wise he’s such an @$$.

AndyMira Says:

Agree RZ!….I don’t like his ‘high nose’ also…2 times umpire asked him whether he wants to challenge..and when he fell..he just ignored the umpire…sooo rude!…It’s not gonna hurt him if he answered the umpire!…Urgh!!

RZ Says:

AM – And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s his insulting the umpires (and “insulting” is a gentle way to put it) and crowd, making racist and sexist remarks, etc.

AndyMira Says:

RZ!….Insulting umpires?U mean when he called the female umpire a w@#$%?
