The US Open women’s field took another hit today as Simona Halep confirmed she will not be heading to New York due to COVID-19 concerns.

After weighing up all the factors involved and with the exceptional circumstances in which we are living, I have decided that I will not travel to New York to play the @usopen,” she posted on twitter.

“I always said I would put my health at the heart of my decision and I therefore prefer to stay and train in Europe. I know the @usta and @WTA have worked tirelessly to put on a safe event and I wish everyone there a successful tournament Folded hands”

Halep made the semifinals at the US Open in 2015, but otherwise has struggled. She’s won just one of her last four matches there.

The Romanian comes off her 21st career title yesterday in Prague. The 2-time Grand Slam champion will set her sights on a second French Open title. But she’s hinted all summer of not playing in New York.

Halep’s exit leaves just four of the Top 10 entered for the US Open. World No. 3 Karolina Pliskova is currently the top seed.
