Hamburg finalists Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas both had to come from two sets down Tuesday to stay alive at the French Open.
Rublev, who beat the Greek Sunday in German, lost two breakers to Sam Querrey before taking it 6-7(5), 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 over the American.
Not soon after, Tsitsipas dug himself out of a 2-0 hole for the first in his career storming back on Jaume Munar 4-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.
“I don’t think I’ve ever played a match like this before,” said Tsitsipas. “The emotions and the nerves at the very beginning were not there, but slight adjustments and tried to find a way to win, a different way.
“It wasn’t working out for me in the beginning. Nothing was working… But I am really proud of myself, the effort I put in and the amount of dedication.”
Earlier under the Chatrier roof, Novak Djokovic destroyed Mikael Ymer 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 to improve to 32-1 on the year.
“Obviously these conditions are different than what we are used to here at Roland Garros,” Djokovic said. “I think it’s quite suitable to my style of the game. I actually enjoyed myself on the court today.
“I think I played really well. A few hiccups here and there, but I think generally the game is there. I’m ready physically, mentally, emotionally to go deep in the tournament. Hopefully I can have another successful year here in Paris.”
Djokovic returns on Thursday to face Ricardas Berankis.
Denis Shapovalov got past a tough test against French veteran Gilles Simon 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
Rafael Nadal returns on Wednesday for second round play against American Mackenzie McDonald. Former champion Dominik Thiem and Stan Wawrinka are also in action.
