Kvitova Downs Muguruza For 2nd Doha Title
Petra Kvitova notched her second career Doha title Saturday blowing past Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-1 in just 66 minutes.
The Czech lefty has now won her last five against Muguruza. Just two days before her 31st birthday, Kvitova picks up her 28th career title in her 38th final (28-10 record in finals!). She won Doha in 2018 when she also beat Muguruza in that final.
“That year it was very tiring. I was very exhausted,” Kvitova said looking back. “I was coming from St. Petersburg playing the Fed Cup, playing Doha, and I remember the semifinal and final was just unbelievably tough.
“This one is a little bit different, I would say, but I’m still tired, of course. But it feels different, because today the conditions were very, very tough compared to that year I didn’t find it that windy, so it was more smoother, I would say. Of course the happiness is still the same”
Muguruza had a glimmer of hope to start the second when she broke Kvitova. But Kvitova ran off six straight games for the title.
“The beginning of the first set were really tight, and especially those three games it was up and down. When I took her serve it felt better, of course, and I felt more relaxed,” Kvitova said.
“Beginning of the second set I didn’t feel the same way. I lost my serve quite quickly, and it was just about, you know, getting on the board again. And to break her in the second game of the second set was really the key probably.”
Muguruza falls to 7-7 in tour finals losing two this year.
“I couldn’t find really my game today,” said Muguruza who was seeking her first title in almost two years since 2019 Monterrey. “Today I think Petra also played very well from the baseline, and it was hard to, I don’t know, to try to make her move or try to do much.”
Both players will be in Dubai next week. They are opposite sides of the draw.
