Former multi-Slams winners Victoria Azarenka and Garbine Muguruza advanced to a Friday semifinal showdown in Doha.
Azarenka, a 2-time Doha champion, ousted top seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-4. She’s now 4-0 against the Ukrainian.
“I really just tried to focus on what I could do, and not think about anything else, and try to find solutions and use every opportunity I had to play,” Azarenka said.
“I just tried to play point by point and not think about the score, how long it’s going to take to play, if it’s going to be two sets or three sets,” Azarenka added. “I’m really proud of the way I handled it mentally and how I approached this match.”
Muguruza had an even easier time rolling past Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1.
Azarenka and Muguruza have split four prior meetings.
In the other semifinal, Petra Kvitova will meet the surging qualifier Jessica Pegula. Kvitova handled Anett Kontaveit in a tough 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Pegula, who made the Australian Open quarterfinals last month, breezed past former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-1.
Since the re-start, Pliskova is just 11-9 with seven losses to players outside the Top 40, and one semifinal in nine events, that a final run in Rome which came up short to Simona Halep. She’s just 5-4 this year.
