Nadal v Djokovic, Tsitsipas v Zverev In French Open SFs; Who’s The Pick?

We are down to just four players in the men’s draw at the French Open. And surprise(!!!), I got all four right!

Let’s be honest, most people had these four, it wasn’t hard to pick. Unlike the women’s draw which blew up early on, the men’s draw was chalk. I’ll bet more people picked at least one of the women’s semifinals than none of the men’s semifinals. You could make a case for Barbora Krejcikova, maybe Maria Sakkari. But in the men’s draw, you had to at least had one of the last four.

Rafael Nadal rolled. Novak Djokovic got through the Italians. Stefanos Tsitsipas looked good and Alexander Zverev recovered nicely from that first round scare and took full advantage of a nice draw.

All four men are playing well, are healthy and should be fit and ready for action. The weather also looks great for the weekend, so that shouldn’t be an issue (or will it?). Now to my picks.

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS v ALEXANDER ZVEREV
At the start of the tournament I went with Zverev mostly on a whim. Tsitsipas seems to be right there at the end of events, he just gets himself into trouble. Maybe overthinks it, overanalyzes.

Zverev isn’t much better. But I feel like he’s more battle-tested. He’s a couple years older with more experience. He’s got the bigger frame, more upside, maybe more desire and he’s slowly turning it a villain-like figure which is something he can draw off of.

Unlike the Russians Daniil Medvedev or Andrey Rublev, or even the Canadians and Casper Ruud, both these guys are a little weird. At least to me. Just in the way they talk, their actions, intents and off court issues.

So in that regard it’s an even more interesting matchup.

Tsitsipas leads 5-2 with Zverev winning their first clash and the last which was in the Acapulco final earlier this year.

It’s hard to make much of their past meetings since this will be there first best-of-5 showdown. I feel like everything will depend on Zverev’s serve. If he wins over 40% of his second, 75% of his first and keeps in a good ace/fault ratio, he’ll win. If he doesn’t he’ll lose.

In his young career, Tsitsipas doesn’t deviate from the norm much. He’s going to be rock solid off the ground and off the serve. He finds trouble when he gets too offensive. So if Zverev serves big, then a big forehand, he can get Tsitsipas off-kilter because the Greek tends to still overhit when playing defense.

But if Tsitsipas is the one dictating especially in return games, then he’s going to win.

I picked Zverev in five sets and since he’s been so good in five of late and Tsitsipas seems to always have at least one five setter during a Slam, I’ll stick with it. It seems to makes sense….for now.
The Pick: Zverev in 5

RAFAEL NADAL v NOVAK DJOKOVIC
On to the big show! Of all the hefty numbers between these two when they meet, the three that mean the most to me for Friday are: Nadal is 7-1 against Djokovic at the French, Nadal is 26-0 when he makes the French semifinals, and Djokovic hasn’t beaten Nadal on clay since Rome in 2016.

So yes, Rafa should win this.

I mentioned the weather earlier, and with it forecasted to be warm and dry, that’s bad news for Novak who I think would prefer it cool and wet like it was in October — and look how that turned out.

This time, I don’t expect Djokovic to waste a set trying dropshots. I liked, no, loved the energy he showed after his win over Matteo Berrettini last night. He’ll need that to have any chance tomorrow.

As usual with these two, it’s so close off the ground that it comes down to the player who serves the best and converts break points.

For this match, I think Nadal seems to be in a better groove. He just got some good rhythm last night blanking Schwartzman in that final set. And remember last October he beat Diego then crushed Novak in the final.

Meanwhile, Djokovic was dealing with the raw power of Berrettini who doesn’t play anything like Rafa. It’s not a big deal I don’t think for Novak (it doesn’t help), but for Rafa I think how he finished off Schwartzman will have him feeling better about his game.

So again, it’s Rafa’s house and until someone can beat him at this stage in Paris, you just have to take him.
The Pick: Nadal in 4

In the first match, I wouldn’t be shocked by any outcome: Tsitsipas winning easily, Zverev cruising, an epic choke at the end. Just about anything. With Tsitsipas and Zverev anything is possible. Zverev seems to have suffered more, so perhaps he’s more deserving. Lol.

In the second, I don’t see Novak rolling Rafa and I don’t see another easy win for the King of Clay like in October. I think in October, Djokovic was still a bit off from that US Open default and maybe wasn’t in the right frame of mind.

Here, I think he’s OK, just the time, place, conditions, fans and opponent are all working against him. But then again, if he can harness that and use it as fuel, he absolutely is capable of beating Rafa again in Paris.

We should have answer in less than 24 hours (I hope… but their matches do run long!).

Andy Mira Says:

Insyaallah Rafa in 3 @ 4…Vamos Rafa!!

#21ispossible!

Michael Says:

I think just for sustaining interest in the French Open as a grand slam tournament, it is high time Novak should win this encounter against Rafa. The biggest disservice to any sport is its unambiguous predictability and French Open is sickeningly turning out to be Rafa’s fiefdom where he is seemingly invincible and just hates to lose. The tide is so overwhelmingly loaded in his favour that it appears even at 40, he will be the King of Roland garros. I hope Novak produces his best game to beat Rafa for once.

J-Kath Says:

Well I never! I wondered where Andy Mira was hiding. Watching behind the sofa like Margo used to do?????

I can understand Michael’s comment re. “predictability” but it will be such a battle that until the very end we will all be on tender-hooks whether we support Rafa or Novak.

skeezer Says:

One thing is for sure, they’ll be lots of time between points, bathroom breaks, MTO’s, etc etc.

Andy Mira Says:

Hahahaha JK!!…Ohh! not only behind the sofa JK!…but i chickenly peeking behind granddaughter’s shoulder now!..hehe😆…Hopefully it’s worth the trouble!haha😁

Btw…very nice to talk to u JK!..I read the other day that u’ve been suffered from several unfortunate incident..I hope everything is well in yor life now …All the best wishes from across the pond JK!😀👋👍

Van Persie Says:

Zverev lost in a final, Medvedev lost in 2, looks like Tsitsi will be the new Runner Up! :)

Daniel Says:

Djoko smash doesn’t fail lol
Unbelievable get from Nadal in that lobby, his wrist rotation insane to push the ball back to court. Worth the effort as it would be another BP. Now game!

Daniel Says:

Now Djoko deserves to lose this match. 3 smashes?!?! And losing 1st gsme after 40-15 up. Gosh

Daniel Says:

Did Djokovic won any point after drop shoting?! Why he insiste on it?! And Nadal is sendind ball up knowing he won’t close the smash. Jess. 4 or 4 of those points already he lost. Exactly the same.

FedExpress Says:

Hate both. Nole more but today I wanna see him win and lose on sunday (which i cant see cause Stefanos will find a way to choke)

1-1 in Sets.

Game on

Van Persie Says:

Wow, I am still happy he Nole did not get a bagel :)

Daniel Says:

Djoko is using a lot of FH cross court not very powerful eith angle and spin not giivong Nadal power to counter attack BH. This shot is working a lot and preparing the point for Djoko.

Daniel Says:

Djoko is breaking Nadal’s BH not with flat and power but placement and spin. Nadal altrady has more than 10+ UE than Djoko amd I bet BH UE is plus20. The shot doesn’t have Nadal usual uber spin that he apolies to his opponent but he is ised to get a fats flat shot attacking hos BH. Not today.

Lets see if Djoko kees thos tactics and imporve his serve a bit. This set he hasn’t faced BP yet.

Daniel Says:

Wow, what a point to save BP. Amazing!!

FedExpress Says:

What a choke by Nole when serving for a 2-1 lead

30-0, sitter for 40-0 missed and gets broken

5-5

Daniel Says:

If Djoko loses this set match over. He insist on lobbing instead of going for volleys. Cost him the 5-4 gane when he was 30-15 up.
Now he will have to serve under huge pressure to force a breaker.

FedExpress Says:

now the 40-15er jokes should stop by Nole tards. Their own man is choking like hell.

Daniel Says:

He lead tbe whole set only to lose it in the end

Daniel Says:

Djokos got some ba***ls. Drop shot set point down!!! Lol and the best he hit all match

Van Persie Says:

SEEEEEEEETTTT!!!!!!

Daniel Says:

Damm Djoko. Ace when needed.

2-1. Kast tike he won 2 straight sets from Nadal in RG he won in 2015 (Inwas there😜).

Now they will have to remove the angry mob. No, I think they will let them stay. People were cheering.

Just 1 more set Djoko and stop goi jg to Nadals BH inside out FH that he will eat DTL.

jatin Says:

One of the best set of tennis I have ever seen. Its almost matching the 2019 Wimbledon final in terms of overall quality.
Bring it on GLADIATORS.. Its something else going on inside the court.

Daniel Says:

Djoko would have advantagr of serving first, he needs a good solid game to open 1-0 and keep the pressure on Nadal from the get go.

Daniel Says:

Why choose the wrong sode tryong to erong foot. Ad Court was totally opne. Cost him the game. Worst ot could happen. Just what Nadal needed to fire him up.

Daniel Says:

Nadal seems more tired. Missing a lot of first serves in the net (not jumping enough) and Djoko doesn’t capitize. Should have broken back already instead lost the game where he was dominating all points. Bizarre

Daniel Says:

Jeez, the third set was 97 min. Is that the longest non final set ever?!

Daniel Says:

Now is the time Djoko. Nadal os totally off, problem with blister, tired, not moivng, low first serves in, playing short. This is it!! He can close this quickly ig he keeps the momentum because Nadal virtually felt the moment.

Daniel Says:

Thsi FH cross court, with spin and angle is THE shot from Djoko. Amazing how at this pont after 57 encountees he is able to add something new with this consistency.

Daniel Says:

Djoko can close this 6-2 with a moral bagle after starting 0-2 down. 2 points away from history!

Triple MP. This is IT!!

Daniel Says:

Nadal MP down in RG. Feels weird lol

Van Persie Says:

Yes Daniel it felt weird :)

Much, much respect to Rafa!!!

Nole, thank you for this and Congrats!!!

Daniel Says:

What a way to avenge that final last year.
Congrats Djoko to doing a feet harder than winning a Grand Slam, beating Nadal on RG. AGAIN!!

One match away from ending the GOAT debate for good. With 19 Slams, 2nd Career Slam, 2 RG, virtually guarantee 7 year end #1 (record alone) and 340+ weeks as number he won’t even need the “20” Slam tag. And Wimbledon and USO around the corner he will be also favorite. Olympics gold could be a bonus.
Mge could do the GRAND SLAM or Golden Slam in a Calender Year still. Another unprecedent achievement in Open Era. Remarkable!!!

Daniel Says:

Oh, and at least one of Borg’s Records on clay will last forever, none wins 6 straight Roland Garros, not even Nadal😜

Wog Boy Says:

“ Insyaallah Rafa in 3 @ 4..”

I think Allah was busy today with other World problems but Jesus had a day off so it came handy for Nole.

Wog Boy Says:

Well..well..well…who would have thought, not too bad Nole, not too bad.

Wog Boy Says:

@Michael
Your wish came through, good to see you back, always nice and fair comments.

@Daniel
You enthusiasm is infectious.

Van Persie Says:

Hi WB,

you wrote me earlier today, I did not get to reply as I was too nervous.:D
I take my words back, I think Nole has a chance in the final, Tsitsi also needed 5 sets.

But, even if he loses I am very happy with today :)

j-kath Says:

Andy Mira – Sorri your RAFA didn’t make it – but both he and Novak gave us an exciting match.

Congrats. on a new generation in your family. Will bring U joy I’m sure.

So I send my Tennis congrats to Wog Boy and VP and all Novak fans.

chrisford1 Says:

Daniel, I agree. Thanks for the running commentary. You might give the Guardian or the NY Times running commentaries a “run for it” if you had the time.
As for Nole-Rafa, both have had great moments that showcase what champions they are. The talent, the gladiator spirit, to never quit, to never stop trying even when the odds are daunting.
Both have it.
But this was Novak’s great moment.
It almost seems right that if Rafa finally went down again, it was not at the hands of a lesser player than him.

chrisford1 Says:

Now Tsitsipas has to quickly shop for “Stan Warinka tennis shorts”.

FedExpress Says:

Nole wont be the GOAT. would be on 19.

Lost more finals at RG and USO than won. Would be still at 19.

Even on 21 GS i wouldnt consider him as the Goat. Djokosmashes, bad net game, psycho behaviour

Daniel Says:

Also another waybif viewing wlthings, Dioko took it to Federer at Wimbeldon (Federer Slasm), winning 3, the most anynolayer has. And now 2 from Nadal in RG, his turf (only another player has 1 win). In Djoko’s home, AO I think both Federer and Nadal have onle one win each, and that prior to Djoko’s start dominating AO. He was and is the only one able to challenge both on their turfs.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

Amazing match! Spectacular achievement by Novak. Which itself says just how uniquely great Rafa has been on clay.

Dave Says:

I’m going to impersonate WogBoy now, it’s only fitting for the occasion. Tsitsipas in 3. Nole doesn’t stand a chance.

Wog Boy Says:

Well Dave, Tsitsipas is in a sizzling form, he has to be favourite.

Dave Says:

They probably shouldn’t even play the match with amount of bagels Djokovic will be eating from Tsitsipas. I doubt he even wins more than the 7 games he took in the final last year. Hahaha

Wog Boy Says:

Just go back to Rome, even Nole said he shouldn’t have won that match and Tsitsi is leading ATP race to Turin, so yes, it’s hard not to see him as favourite.

chrisford1 Says:

Dave, it might be WB’s good luck charm to trash Novak in the runup to the match that then if Novak wins – is even further proof that Novak is the best ever, and an exceptional Serb, etc..
In that spirit – “Novak is so lucky Nadal was able to take Diego Schwartzman down and helped clear the way for Novak to win the semis. Diego would have shredded Novak. HIs wife is going to matches again, and that will be sure to mess Novak up at some point as well. It’s hopeless, easy prey for Tsitsipas!!

Wog Boy Says:

CF1,
Actually, now when you mentioned Jelena, I am even more worried because of her presence.

Van Persie Says:

J-K,

Thank you :)

Wog Boy Says:

VP,
All good, and I know where are you coming from.

Wog Boy Says:

JK,
Thanks, good to see you back.

Giles Says:

Well at least it wasn’t the final.
Vamos Tsitsi!

Giles Says:

No one won FO after beating Nadal. Hope this trend continues.
Vamos Tsitsi.

Van Persie Says:

Giles,

Also no one beat Nadal before in a semifinal at the FO, till now ;)

Andy Mira Says:

JK…Thank u for yor words!…Really appreciate it!😃👍

Giles Says:

Insyallah Tsitsi will bury the faker tomorrow. Vamos Tsitsi 👍👍👍👍👹

Tennis Lover Says:

Out of all the new generation competitors, Stefanos resembles most Roger Federer in terms of styles and attitude and particularly how they represent themselves on the court. Roger has won his first Grandsalm at the age of 22. Can Stefanos repeat the same feat by winning his first slam at 22 in Rolland Garros today against of the greatests of the game?
