Top seed and favorite Ash Barty held off a late charge from former finalist Vera Zvonareva to win it 6-1, 7-6(7) and advanced to the second round of the US Open.
The 36-year-old Zvonareva who made the the 2010 US Open final held a set point in the second to push it to three in this first-time meeting.
“Obviously a tough one against Vera straight up,” Barty said. “She’s an experienced campaigner. She knows how to get herself into matches. I think all in all, adapting to conditions was a little bit slower than I probably would have liked, we’re through. We have another chance to improve on that in the next round.”
“I think when my back was against the wall late in that buster, I came up with some really good stuff,” Barty added. “That’s all we can ask is when your back is against the wall, you trust yourself, you go out there and pick your spots and hit them.”
The 25-year-old Barty has won 13 of her last 14 matches. She’ll now meet 18-year-old Clara Tauson.
Keeping pace was fellow French Open champio Iga Swiatek who got past Jamie Loeb 6-3, 6-4.
“It’s the first round so my level isn’t going to be as high as usual, but that’s normal,” Swiatek said. “I think I’m going to get into the rhythm in the next round. But I’m really happy with how I played this. My opponent played really well. When my shots didn’t have perfect precision, she used that and she played really fast.”
Karolina Pliskova also upended an American defeating Caty McNally 6-3, 6-4. She’ll now meet Amanda Anismova who got a win today on her 20th birthday.
Tokyo gold medalist Belinda Bencic took care of Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-4. Maria Sakkari also won in straights defeating Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-3.
“I felt very comfortable on the court,” said Bencic. “I felt like my serve was helping me a lot. In the last couple of matches I played a lot of times against left-handed players, so for sure it’s a little bit more tricky for me, especially against her today.
Petra Kvitova, Jessica Pegula, Emma Raducanu and Liudmila Samsonova were winners. Sara Sorribes Tormo pulled a mild upset beating Australian semifinalist Karolina Muchova.
In the nightcap, Bianca Andreescu came from a break down in the third to deny Victorija Golubic 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Andreescu had to deal with some stomach issues in the second then overcame a 4-2 hole in the third. The Canadian is 8-0 now at the US Open.
