The big showdown between Simona Halep and Paula Badosa turned out to be a dud for the home folks at the Madrid Masters as the Romanian rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win over the No. 2 seed.

Halep, a 2-time champion and 2-time runner-up, lost an early break but pulled away from 3-all, winning nine of the last 10 games in this first-time meeting.

“I will take this match as a boost and confidence because I played with one of the best players in the world,” said Halep who is in Madrid with Serena’s old coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Halep will now face Coco Gauff on Monday in the third round. Gauff had battle to knock out the feisty Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

Halep has won both meetings with the American teen.

Belinda Bencic won her 9th straight match but had to go three to defeat Karolina Muchova 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Amanda Anismova ousted Petra Martic rallying from a set down in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka eased past French semifinalist Tamara Zidansek in three and Ons Jabuer was also a winner.

Tomorrow, the second round concludes with Danielle Collins colliding with Bianca Andreescu, Emma Raducanu faces Marta Kostyuk and Naomi Osaka takes on Sara Sorribes Tormo.

“I know it’s gonna be tough, but I don’t think I’m gonna think much in that match, because I think we both are different players than we were,” Sorribes Tormo said of Osaka who she beat on the clay at the 2020 Fed Cup.

“Will be only good in the part that I have already played her. I know how the ball is coming. I know more or less what she’s doing, and she also knows about me.

“I think will be completely different match and hopefully can be a tough match and good for me.”
