Iga Swiatek kept her streak rolling dominating Elena-Gabriela Ruse, 6-3, 6-0 in the second round at the Rome Masters.

The World No. 1 who skipped Madrid broke seven times in the easy win.

“I’m pretty proud I could get into the rhythm today, just take some lessons during the match and improve my game, game by game,” Swiatek said.

“That was pretty solid match for me,” she said. “I think she’s playing really solid tennis. I could feel that today on my racquet, that she could really give back some strong hits.”

Swiatek will have a big upgrade next in Victoria Azarenka.

Former champion Simona Halep fell in her first match to Danielle Collins 7-6(1), 6-3.

“Simona is someone that I’ve looked up to for a long time, somebody that I really admire as a competitor, as an athlete,” said the American. “I felt like today kind of worked in my favor because I know her game so well from watching a lot.

“I had to come out and play really aggressive and be consistent at the same time, because she’s relentless, she gets everything back. I just had to be really patient. There were times I was a little up and down with my serving, so I kind of made some adjustments, and just tried to be not too hard on myself.”

Fellow American Amanda Anismova also had a good day ousting gold medalist Belinda Bencic

“[She] is a really aggressive player, I feel like we have some similarities in our games,” Collins said of Anismova. “It will be interesting playing each other for the first time.”

Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina advanced to a meeting. Kasatkina knocked out US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez.

Garbine Muguruza’s struggles continued as the former French Open winner fell to Yulia Putintseva 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1.

A finalist here the last three years winning in 2019, Karolina Pliskova was sent home by Jil Teichmann 6-4 in the third. Anett Kontaveit was also upset by Petra Martic in straight sets.

Tomorrow, Coco Gauff returns to face Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka will have her hands full with Jessica Pegula.

Bianca Andreescu and Ons Jabeur are also in action.
