Jabeur Eliminated From Australian Open; Swiatek, Top Americans Today

Ons Jabeur’s dreams of a 2023 Australian Open title came to an end Thursday night in Melbourne after Marketa Vondrousova upset the world No. 2 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 in the second round.

Vondrousova, a former French Open finalist plagued by injuries, confounding game gave Jabeur fits. And afterward, the 2-time Slam finalist released a statement:

“I had a difficult time breathing. Not sure what’s happening. Marketa played a good match and deserved to win. I will do my best to come back stronger.”


Vondrousova moves on to meet teen phenom Linda Fruhvirtova who hasn’t dropped a set in her Australian Open debut.

American 21-year-old qualifier Katie Volynets scored her own upset with the biggest win of her young career defeating No. 9 seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Aryna Sabalenka got down a break before rolling past the dangerous Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-1. Sabalenka didn’t even hit a double fault!

“It was a great match,” Sabalenka said. “Always a tough opponent to play against, and I’m super happy that I was able to finish this game in two sets.”

US Open semifinalist Caroline Garcia fought off Leylah Fernandez in straights. Belinda Bencic overcame an early deficit to deny Claire Liu and Karolina Pliskova also advanced.

Today, Iga Swiatek returns along with the top ranked American women led by Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff and 2022 runner-up Danielle Collins.
