Davis Cup qualifying was held across the globe with 12 teams moving on in the competition.

Former 3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka fell to Alexander Zverev in Switzerland’s tie with Germany. But Wawrinka clinched the comeback from down 1-2 to beat Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

“I’m happy I won one point and the last one was the most important,” said Wawrinka. “[Marc] played super well against Zverev. He put us back in the tie after losing the doubles.”

Borna Coric also played hero winning both singles including the clincher over Dominic Thiem to lead Croatia past Austria. Ugo Humber went 2-0 to put France over the top of Hungary.

The full line up for the 2023 Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals Group Stage was confirmed after the Qualifiers wrapped up in spectacular style on Sunday.

It was a day for history makers in the men’s World Cup of Tennis, as Korea Republic recovered from 0-2 down for the first time to claim a remarkable 3-2 victory over Belgium, while Finland sealed their first ever berth in the Finals Group Stage with a 3-1 win over Argentina.

Elsewhere, Netherlands cruised past Slovakia 4-0, and there were 3-1 victories for Chile, Croatia and Czech Republic over Kazakhstan, Austria and Portugal respectively.

The six victorious teams follow France, Great Britain, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland and USA in progressing from this weekend’s Qualifiers.

The 12 winning nations in the Qualifiers join 2022 champions Canada, 2022 runners-up Australia and wild cards Italy and Spain at the 2023 Finals. The Group Stage will be played across four venues from 12 to 17 September, with the eight best-performing teams advancing to the Final 8 Knockout Stage in Malaga, Spain from 21 to 26 November.

The venues for the Finals Group Stage and the details of the draw for the Finals will be confirmed in due course.

There were also 12 ties in both the World Group I Play-offs and World Group II Play-offs taking place this weekend – a total of 36 ties played on a home-and-away basis around the world. (NB the World Group II Play-off tie between Zimbabwe and Uruguay will be completed on Monday due to poor weather)

Winning nations in the World Group I Play-offs will contest World Group I ties in September, alongside the 12 losing nations from the Qualifiers. Losing nations in the World Group I Play-offs and winning nations in the World Group II Play-offs will contest World Group II ties in September. Losing nations in the World Group II Play-offs will compete at a regional Group III event to be held later in 2023.

The draw for September’s World Group I and World Group II ties will take place at the ITF offices in London at 11:00 GMT on Thursday 9 February.
