Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the Madrid Masters the tournament announced earlier today.

Djokovic has had a rough start to his clay campaign losing in the second match in both Monte Carlo to Lorenzo Musetti and then yesterday to Dusan Lajovic in Banja Luka.

“I was many levels below what I want,” Djokovic said Friday. “Playing like that, I can’t win against opponents who are so solid on this surface. But what can I do? It’s simply sport. I was trying but it wasn’t working.

“I didn’t feel very good physically on court. My legs were slow, I missed a lot of balls. I played well at times, but generally well below standard.”

No official reason has been given at this time for his withdrawal, but the elbow has been an issue. He still has Rome on the calendar before the French Open next month.

“@DjokerNole is unable to compete at the #MMOPEN. Wishing you a speedy recovery, we hope to see you back on court as soon as possible, Nole,” the tournament posted on twitter.

Djokovic, a 3-time Madrid champion, lost in the semifinals last year in Spain to Carlos Alcaraz.
