Rafael Nadal Withdraws From Rome, French Looking Shaky
Rafael Nadal inched closer to missing the French Open. The global superstar announced Friday that he will miss the upcoming Rome Masters next week as the hip injury sustained at the Australian Open is still an issue.
Nadal took to social media to give the news:
“Hello everyone! I’m so sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play in Rome. You all know how much it hurts me to miss another of the tournaments that has been so important to me, both professionally and personally, because of all the affection and support of the Italian fans.
“Despite having noticed an improvement in the last few days, it has been many months since I’ve been able to train at a high level and the adaptation process takes time. All that is left for me to do is accept it and keep working. Best wishes to everyone.”
The 10-time champion who turns 37 in less than a month hasn’t missed Rome since 2004.
Nadal still has a few weeks to get healthy until the start of the French Open on May 28th. But would be go this long without playing to return in a best-of-5 format? Or might he take a wildcard into a lead-up event?
