Defending Champion Elena Rybakina Withdraws From Rome
For the second time this year, Elena Rybakina has withdrawn from a Masters 1000 level event due to an illness and done so as a defending champion!
There’s only been four on the women’s side and Rybakina’s withdrawn from half: Indian Wells and now the Rome Masters which she won last year.
“I am disappointed to have to withdraw from Rome this year, but unfortunately I do not feel well enough to compete. I have such good memories from last year and was looking forward to defending my title,” she said.
“”Rome is so special to me, and I look forward to being back next year to reclaim my title and play in front of the Italian fans.”
Rybakina was scheduled to face Irina-Camelia Begu earlier today. She’ll now head to the French Open where she will be among the Top 4-5 favorites provided she is healthy. She also failed to finish the French last year!
