Garcia Upset By Osorio In Rainy Rome; Swiatek, Gauff Tomorrow
On a wet middle Saturday at the Rome Masters, six of the eight third round matches scheduled were completed.
Caroline Garcia was the story of the day as she fell to Camila Osorio 6-4, 6-4 giving the Colombian her first ever Top 5 win.
“She played unreal tennis in Lyon, and I had the chance to compete again. Beating her is unreal,” she told the WTA.
“She’s a super-aggressive player, always trying to step into the court. Whether you’re serving or returning you’re always feeling the pressure. I was just thinking about what I could control. I was going to see a lot of balls passing by, but the things I could control were moving my serve around and being really ready for the first shots. Serve and legs, return and legs, try not to go back, try to step in.”
No. 11 Veronika Kudermetova advanced past the 23rd-seeded Anastasia Potapova winning the last four games to take it in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
No. 12 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia bounced 17th-seeded Magda Linette bounced 7-5, 6-4.
The 22nd-seeded Qinwen Zheng overcame Anna Bondar of Hungary in straight sets 7-6(7-2), 6-4. After authoring big upsets Thursday, Sofia Kenin and Taylor Townsend both fell. The 30th-seeded Anhelina Kalinina beat Kenin 6-4, 6-2 while Xiyu Wang bested Townsend 6-2, 0-6, 7-5.
