Rybakina, Jabeur Enjoy An Easy Day, Set Wimbledon Rematch; Swiatek v Svitolina QF
The favorites all advanced Monday in the women’s draw at Wimbledon in fourth round play.
In the big match of the day, Ons Jabeur hammered 2-time finalist Petra Kvitova 6-0, 6-3 giving the Czech her worst loss on grass.
“When I won the first set I said to myself the match starts again because against Petra, you can win the first set 6-0, and then lose the second 6-0 after,” Jabeur said. “It’s always tricky to play her and I just tried to stay in the moment.”
Jabeur dominated in just over an hour to return to her third straight Wimbledon quarterfinal.
“I’m loving every moment that I’m here. You guys have no idea the energy you bring to me,” Jabeur said on court.
“I just want to win every match so I can see you the next day, so remember this because I’m playing Rybakina.”
Elena Rybakina had earlier advanced via retirement. Playing in her first Wimbledon fourth round, Beatriz Haddad Maia had to withdraw down 4-1 with a back injury she suffered a game earlier.
“I’m feeling much better and more confident coming and playing on Centre Court. It is different from the first round,” Rybakina said.
“I think now mentally I’m much better. Physically also good now. Yeah, hopefully I just continue like this.”
Rybakina has won her last 11 at Wimbledon and hasn’t dropped serve since the first few minutes of the event. And she’ll have to beat Jabeur once again.
“It will be a difficult match. I’m probably going for my revenge. It was a difficult final last year,” said Jabeur.
“It’s going to bring a lot of memories. I’m hoping to play like today and just get the win. She’s an amazing player.
“You can see she’s like ‘boom boom’ all the time! There’s no mercy with her so let’s see what’s going to happen.”
Madison Keys overcame a set and 4-1 down to teen phenom Mirra Andreeva 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2. Keys went up 2-0 to start the match but the 16-year-old quickly got on a run and was a point from 5-1 in the second. Keys upped the power, the pressure and the net play to regain the upper hand.
Keys will now face Aryna Sabalenka who returned to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Tomorrow, the quarterfinals get underway with top seed Iga Swiatek taking on Elina Svitolina. Swiatek was the victor in their lone collision at Rome in 2021.
Also, in her first Wimbledon quarterfinal, No. 4 Jessica Pegula squares off against Marketa Vondrousova in a first-time tour-level contest.
