It was a very mixed day for the top two seeds in Tokyo on Friday.

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek suffered another early exit this time going down to Russian No. 8 seed Veronika Kudermetova in three 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

The 26-year-old Kudermetova took advantage of 50 unforced errors and six double faults from Swiatek who tossed in four dubs in the third set. It was her first win over Swiatek in five tries.

“I tried to just believe that I can beat her. Today it happened. I’m really happy that I managed to switch and win one match,” Kudermetova said to the WTA.

In her last four events, Swiatek has zero finals and just one semifinal. She’s also just 1-3 in her lat four meetings with Top 20 players.

Kudermetova makes her 20th career semifinal where she will face 2-time finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

The second-seeded Jessica Pegula had no such struggles pounding No. 6 Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-0. Kasatkina won just 14/36 (39%) on first serves and 4/15 (27%) on second serves.

In the semifinals, Pegula will face Guadalajara champion Maria Sakkari who bested Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-2.
