Swiatek Rolls Past Samsonova For Beijing 1000 Title
After a down two months, Iga Swiatek is back on top with a convincing run to the Beijing title dominating Liudmila Samsonova of Russia in straights 6-2, 6-2.
“I’m happy that I won because, for sure, this is really big for me,” Swiatek said to the WTA. “Winning this title is something that I never would have thought at the beginning of the tournament about. I’m pretty proud of myself.”
Swiatek won 23/27 (85%) of first service points, never faced a break point and ended 4-of-4 on break chances.
Swiatek broke for each set in the easy win. She improves to 3-0 against Samsonova. The former No. 1 dropped just one set all event.
“Well, for sure you could feel that we are playing a final because it was a little bit tense, I would say,” added Swiatek. “But I’m happy that I kind of adjusted to what Liudmila was playing. I wanted to really be consistent with what I wanted to do no matter how she’s doing.”
Swiatek captures her 16th career title in her 20th career final. She’s now 16-4 in finals after her 5th win this season. It’s also her sixth
Samsonova was seeking her 5th and biggest title.
“I think this is what she’s doing the best because this is the stress that she made to other players, that she doesn’t make unforced errors,” Samsonova stated. “Every time you need to do something more. It’s not real what you feel, but she makes you feel like this. This is what I learned today.”
Swiatek’s win also moves her within 630 points from Aryna Sabalenka‘s top ranking. The two will be together for the final showdown in Cancun later this month.
