News broke earlier today that Andy Murray had withdrawn from Wimbledon after undergoing back surgery to remove a spinal cyst on Saturday.

That would be more than believable given that playing just 9-10 days after back surgery seems like a very long shot.

The official ATP twitter account posted the message, “After an operation on a spinal cyst, Andy Murray is sadly out of Wimbledon. Rest up and recover Andy, we’ll miss seeing you there.”

But that tweet has since been deleted and his management, according to other reports, says he’ll still try to play Wimbledon.

Though one other London paper is saying the opposite, “While Murray’s management team have offered no official update as yet, sources have told The Telegraph that there is a likely six-week lay-off period associated with the process, also throwing into serious doubt his involvement in the Olympic Games in Paris.”

After losing at Queen’s in London earlier in the week, Murray spoke about the injury.

“My back’s been a problem for quite a while, and it’s been sore in the buildup to the tournament,” Murray said. “It was pretty sore in my match yesterday. Yeah, it was sore through today. But I was able to manage it. I wasn’t comfortable playing, but I was able to manage it.

“I have dealt with back issues for a long time, for the last ten years or so, and it’s probably quite common for a lot of players. But I have never had that loss of, I don’t know, loss of coordination, loss of control, strength in the leg before.

“It’s not a back spasm. I have neural pain across my lower back. It’s a nerve-type sort of discomfort.”

Of course Murray’s participation at Wimbledon will be a boon for the event as far as buzz and tv ratings in what could be his farewell. The longer he can stay in, the better for the tournament and for Murray.

The qualifying begins on Monday with the draw expected out on Friday. Murray could play as early as next Monday.
