Sinner, Rune Out Of Olympics Ahead Of Draw
With the Paris Olympic draws out Thursday, two more top players withdrew from the event. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner pulled out as did Denmark’s Holger Rune. Both would have made their Olympic debuts.
Sinner cited a case of tonsillitis as the cause.
“I’m extremely sad and disappointed. Competing at the Olympic Games was one of my main goals for this season. I was really looking forward to being back at Roland Garros and playing for my country in this prestigious event. However, after seeing my doctors on Tuesday and waiting an extra day to give myself some more time to see if my condition would improve, things unfortunately got worse.”
Later in the day, Rune posted on social media that he was out due to a wrist.
“I am really sorry that I will be unable to play the Olympics. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to playing and being a part of,” Rune wrote.
“I have played with pain in my wrist throughout both the clay and grass season, so I have to take the medical recommendations seriously. I will follow the Olympics from home and cheer on all the Danish athletes and I hope and believe that we can bring home many medals from Paris. Come on
Denmark 💪🏼”
The event is still left with five men in the Top 10 and 12 in the Top 20 including Novak Djokovic who will seek a first gold medal, the only missing trophy left.
Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz lead the men’s field.
The draws for men’s and women’s singles plus doubles will take place Thursday in Paris.
