Coco Gauff made a massive coaching change and immediately found the grove this week in Beijing capturing here second Masters level title winning the China Open over Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3.

Gauff, who had struggled since winning the US Open last year with just one title in Auckland the last 12 months, parted with coach Brad Gilbert two weeks ago and joined with little-known Matt Daly, the results paid off.

“I think last year, I won US Open and I was like, the rest of the season, I want to do well, but whatever, just play and see what happens,” Gauff told WTA Insider. “And then this time it was like, well, I haven’t done so well. The tournaments that I really wanted to do well in, the Slams, that was over. So it was kind of, let’s just see what happens here.

“I always think that this part of the season will always just be more relaxed for me.”

Gauff benefited from a Naomi Osaka retirement and then came from a set down in three straight matches before today’s lopsided win.

Gauff is now 8-1 on tournament finals and she’s 3-0 against Muchova, 6-0 in sets. She’s still just 20!

“A lot of times people forget that I’m still in the developmental phase of my career and nothing is going to be great,” Gauff added to the Insider. “Most of the people doing well are 25 and older in the Top 10, maybe with the exception of Iga. We have a long way to go and I still have a lot that I need to work on and I’m proud of myself thus far.

“I didn’t have a complete game at 15 and I don’t have one right now, but I’ve been on tour playing every week almost, trying to be better. I’m just super proud of that.”

Muchova had upset Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng, but the Czech falls to 0-3 against Gauff.

“I lost to her three times in a row. I’ll say very similar losses. It was always the latest rounds of the tournaments when I got many matches under the belt,” she said.

“It’s very physical with her. I felt like the second one always in the rallies.”
