2024 Shanghai Masters Day 5: Sinner, Alcaraz, Medvedev In Action; Djokovic A Winner

Rains hit Shanghai earlier in the week forcing many of the top stars to play back-to-back, and that will including Beijing finalists and top seeds Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz, who beat Sinner on Wednesday, took out Jerry Chang and today will face Yibing Wu.

Sinner knocked out Taro Daniel in his opener yesterday and will face today No. 31 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Sinner and Alcaraz could meet in the semifinals with Sinner slated to take on Ben Shelton in the fourth round and then Medvedev in the quarters. Alcaraz might see Tommy Paul down the road.

“He pushes me to do better, you know, which is something good, where then I try to improve my game in the next days or, you know, in the off-season, you know, you’re going to practice for that. Off the court, you know, we are quite similar,” Sinner said of Alcaraz.

Medvedev is also on court Sunday and he’ll battle Italian Matteo Arnaldi.

Yesterday, the big news was the return of Novak Djokovic. The all-time great eased past American Alex Michelson in two breakers, saving two set points in the second set breaker. It was Djokovic’s first tournament win since falling at the US Open to Alexei Popyrin in a third round shocker.

“It was the first match against Alex and I also hadn’t played in a while, so it took me a little time to get the rust off,” said Djokovic to the ATP. “He started off terrifically; big serves and an aggressive style of tennis… he’s not afraid to step it up and take it to his opponent.

“It was a very close encounter and I thought a high level of tennis in both sets. I’m just glad to keep calm when it mattered in the second-set tiebreak.”

This week, Djokovic resumes his quest for title No. 100.

“The expectations are always there,” Djokovic said. “Any tournament I play, anywhere I play, any match I play people expect me always to win. I’m used to that by now. I have, of course, expectations for myself. Any match, against anybody, anywhere, I want to win. So that’s the kind of mentality that I’ve nurtured my entire career, it’s no different here.”

Also in action today are Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Holger Rune takes on Matteo Berrettini.
