2024 Shanghai Masters Day 9: Sinner v Medvedev, Alcaraz v Machac In QFs; Djokovic Wins

The quarterfinal stage of the biggest men’s event in Asia gets underway Thursday at the Shanghai Masters.
The top favorites Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic all advanced to the last eight on Tuesday.
Sinner ended the hopes of Ben Shelton in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(1). Shelton was celebrating his 22nd birthday.
Alcaraz eased past Gael Monfils 6-4, 7-5 and Novak Djokovic handled Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-2.
Djokovic will have a day off before coming back Friday to face 19-year-old Jakob Mensik who ousted Grigor Dimitrov.
But Sinner and Alcaraz’s top half are due for quarterfinal play today.
Sinner will one against tangle with Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev just upended Stefanos Tsitsipas and it was just about a year ago when Medvedev was 6-0 against the Italian. Sinner has since won six of their last seven including a 4-set US Open quarterfinal win.
“We played already four times this year,” Medvedev said of the matchup. “I think one was very easy for him. The other three were tougher, I played well in some of them. I’m going to bring the fight, I’m going to prepare tactically, mentally, physically. It’s going to be a tough match, so hopefully my body feels well, and I’m ready, yeah, to bring the fight and go for it.”
Alcaraz will be up against Tomas Machac who is enjoying his best year as a pro, and he just upset Tommy Paul. Alcaraz won their only meeting by retirement in the Davis Cup.
The other quarterfinal on Friday will pit Taylor Fritz against David Goffin. Fritz blew past Holger Rune while the veteran Goffin stunned Alexander Zverev.
