2024 Shanghai Masters Day 10: Djokovic, Fritz QF Favorites; Machac Spoils Alcaraz-Sinner SF
A Carlos Alcarz-Jannik Sinner rematch in China will have to wait another year as Tomas Machac spoiled the dream semifinal.
Sinner began quarterfinal day at the Shanghai Masters getting over once again on Daniil Medvedev 6-1, 6-4. It was Sinner’s seventh win in eight tries over Russian in the last 12 months.
“Obviously I’m very happy to be in this position. Being in the semifinals of a Masters is always a big step forward,” Sinner said. “It’s a huge accomplishment from my side, but we try to keep going, we try to improve and see what I can do. But talking about today, it was a great match, and I’m looking forward to the semis.”
Alcaraz was slated to be Sinner’s next opponent, but Machac ended those hopes. The Czech continued his breakout season stunning the Spaniard 7-6(5), 7-5.
Alcaraz had just won Beijing and had won his last 12 matches, but Machac rose to the challenge.
“I knew that the level of my tennis would be great because I am playing the best right now, for sure,” Machac told the ATP. “I beat Tommy Paul last match with an unbelievable performance. With these types of players, I have to play this level otherwise it’s 6-2, 6-3, you go home, there is no other option. I am happy I managed to play like this for two sets.
“I knew that I had a chance, but you never know, even with a set and 5-4 it’s still so far from winning the match. I played great tennis against him in the Davis Cup, but there was this level only one set. Today it was two, so it was enough.”
In the bottom half quarterfinals tomorrow, Novak Djokovic will meet the 19-year-old Jakob Mensik and Taylor Fritz will be the big favorite against David Goffin.
