Top 4 Seeds Led By Alcaraz, Sinner Roll Into Miami QFs; Rybakina, Azarenka Set SF
For the first time since 2009, all Top 4 men’s seeds have reached the Miami Masters quarterfinals.
The Top 4 rolled into the last eight with wins by Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev surging into the quarterfinals.
Alcaraz proved too strong for Lorenzo Musetti collecting his 9th straight win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
“I know that his style is playing from the back with spin. I tried to not let him feel comfortable on the court,” said Alcaraz. “I tried to play my game, play aggressive with my shots, go to the net, drop shots, my style. I think I did pretty well and I’m really happy with my performance.”
Alcaraz, the Indian Wells champion, will not take on the hot-handed Grigor Dimitrov who ousted former champion Hubert Hurkacz in a thriller 7-6(3) in the third.
“It was a very tough battle today. Hubi is such an amazing guy,” Dimitrov said. “I think above all I was just happy that I could stay in the match and have such a good run. He’s such a tricky competitor, so crafty around the court. I think physically we were both going at each other very hard today. It was a pleasant match honestly to play.”
Defending champion Medvedev won his 9th straight in Miami with a 7-6(5), 6-0 win over Dominik Koepfer. And Zverev cruised past Karen Khachanov 6-1, 6-4 in a rematch of their Olympic gold medal match. Medvedev meets big Chilean Nicolas Jarry on Wednesday.
Sinner was a winner again taking out Christopher O’Connell from a break down in the first 6-4, 6-3. He’ll face Tomas Machac today.
In the women’s draw, 3-time champion Victoria Azarenka outlasted Yulia Putintseva in three sets 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-3.
“Very happy with today’s win,” Azarenka said afterwards. “It’s good to be back in the later stages of the tournament, it’s what I work for, so definitely very happy to go through.”
In the evening, 2023 finalist Elena Rybakina edged Maria Sakkari 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4. Rybakina had match points in the second but had to wait another hour to finish the job.
“I have no words because I’m so tired. But I’m really happy with the win. It was such a tough battle,” Rybakina said.
Today, Jessica Pegula takes on Ekaterina Alexandrova and Caroline Garcia duels Danielle Collins.
