The top seeds continued to dominate the men’s draw at the Miami Masters.

On Wednesday on the first day of the quarterfinals, No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner and No. 3 Daniil Medvedev cruised into the Friday semifinals and set up another showdown.

Sinner handled Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2 to improve to 20-1 on the season. The Italian has now made five straight tournament semifinals and it’s his second Miami final four.

“Physically I feel good. I’m just happy to compete,” Sinner said. “We practice very hard to be in these positions and I’m really happy I can play once again in the semis here at such a special tournament. It’s special for me, I made my first Masters 1000 final here, so I’m really happy to be back in the semis.”

Medvedev also won in straight topping fellow big Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 7-6(7). Medvedev’s now 18-3 this year with semifinals at all four events he’s played.

“The first set I thought I was playing a good level, not doing anything extra, just enough to win,” Medvedev said. “Then he started to play much better and it was tough rallies, tough points. He served better and it was just a matter of a few points in the tie-break.”

“I was expecting he would get a lot of support from the Chileans and it was a good atmosphere.”

Medvedev leads 6-4 including a win in the 2023 Miami final. But Sinner enjoyed the biggest win of his career in the Australian Open final. The Italian has won four straight over Medvedev since that Miami loss.

Today, the men’s quarters conclude with top seed Carlos Alcaraz meeting Grigor Dimitrov. Alexander Zverev will face Fabian Marozsan.

In the women’s quarterfinals, Danielle Collins stayed hot hammer Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2 to reach her second Miami semifinal. Collins, who will retire at the end of the year,

“I think a lot of these sports psychology books, they talk about being in the zone, almost feeling like you’re hitting beach balls,” Collins said after. “I think it can feel like that at times. That’s a good thing. In other times that I have played well and have had deep runs in tournaments, it’s been like that. And then in other times, it’s like going out to the golf range and having a bad day and you’re missing shots.

“But right now I’m timing the ball really well.”

Up next for Collins today in the semifinals will be surprise Ekaterina Alexandrova who backed up her Iga Swiatek win with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over American No. 2 Jessica Pegula.

Collins and Alexandrova have never met before.

In the first semi, 3-time champion Victoria Azarenka collides with 2023 finalist Elena Rybakina.
