Alcaraz Rocks Ruud, Sinner Next In Beijing SF; Medvedev v Zverev
It’s a star-studded semifinal line-up in Beijing with Carlos Alcaraz taking on Jannik Sinner in the best young rivalry in men’s tennis. And in the undercard, Daniil Medvedev meets Alexander Zverev.
In a rematch of their US Open final collision last year, Alcaraz cruised past 7th-seeded Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Alcaraz enjoyed 15 break point, converting on four while Ruud had only two chances, but did cash one in at the start to lead 2-0.
“I am very happy,” Alcaraz said to the ATP. “To be able to beat a player like Casper in straight sets is really good. It means you are playing well. It is really tough, big rallies at the beginning of the match, but I am really happy with the level. Being able to find solutions after the start of the first set. These kind of matches give you extra confidence.”
Alcaraz, into his 23rd career semifinal, is now 4-0 against Ruud.
No. 6 seed Sinner topped the 32-year-old Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Zverev and Medvedev also won three setters. The 8th-seeded Zverev got over on Nicolas Jarry of Chile 6-1, 6-7(5-7), 6-3 and the 2nd-seeded Medvedev moved past French lefty Ugo Humbert 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
“I am happy to be in the semi-finals. When you come to the tournament, you always want to go as far as possible. Happy to still be here tomorrow. The further we go, the tougher the matches, the tougher the opponents. That’s normal,” said Medvedev.
Tomorrow, Alcaraz and Sinner have split six meetings with Sinner coming out ahead in their most recent meeting in the 2023 Miami Masters semifinals.
Medvedev leads Zverev 9-7 but Zverev won in the fourth round at Cincinnati. The German also has won his last seven matches, his last four in straight sets going back to his Chengdu title run.
