Sinner Soars Past Alcaraz, Will Battle Medvedev For Beijing Title
Jannik Sinner proved once again to have Carlos Alcaraz’s number. The Italian won a tight opener then blew past the Spanish top seed 7-6(4), 6-1 to reach the Beijing final.
Alcaraz took advantage of early errors from Sinner to go up by a break twice. But errors crept into Alcaraz’s game and by the end of the match the 20-year-old had 30 unforced, 20 off the forehand which was spraying everywhere in the second set.
“For sure in the very top,” Sinner said of where this win ranked. “I would say every match against him is very tough. We always show great respect, we both play great. When we play against each other, we try to stay on our limits.
“Today I played a little bit better in the important moments. In the second set, it was 6-1 but he had a lot of chances and I just tried to stay focused. And obviously the first set was a little more of a roller coaster and I tried to stay there mentally and obviously I’m very happy with the performance.”
Sinner improves to 4-3 against Alcaraz winning the last two. He moves into his 12th career final and eyes eyeing his 9th career title.
He’ll face the 2nd-seeded Daniil Medvedev who defeated No. 8 seed Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-3.
Medvedev tallied eight aces, never lost serve while breaking the German twice in the match.
“It’s an amazing, strong field so it’s great to be in the final against one of the amazing Sinner or Alcaraz,” Medvedev said.
“I’m really happy with my level. Roof closed, different conditions today, much faster. Both of us are big servers so it came down to just a few opportunities and I managed to serve better when I had break points to save than he did.”
Medvedev makes his 34th career final. He is looking for his 21st career title and first since Rome.
Medvedev has never lost to Sinner, leading 6-0 in tour-level head-to-head clashes including taking their most recent clash in the Miami Masters final.
