Medvedev Proves Superior To Sinner, Wins Miami Masters Title
Daniil Medvedev cruised to his first Miami Masters title Sunday defeating Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3.
Medvedev collects his 5th Masters trophy, 19th career title and his fourth in his last five events. It’s his 24th win in his last 25 matches.
“I’m really happy. Today was a tough match. It was probably the hottest day and the most humid during the day,” Medvedev said. “It was not easy conditions. I don’t know if Jannik had a small injury or cramp. I was also struggling, tried not to show it.
“I haven’t won’t such a big title in probably a year and a half,” he said. “At the end I was quite shaky. Not even tight, because I’m not scared to win. But still the hands get a little shaky so the serve is a little bit tougher… I managed to get myself together and close the match.”
Sinner admitted afterward he wasn’t feeling his best.
“I woke up not in the best possible way. I felt a little bit sick, but we tried, you know, to go out of the courts, I mean, to go on the court, trying to give it a shot, give it a try,” Sinner said.
“Unfortunately today was not my day. But still, I don’t want to take nothing away from Daniil. He was serving incredible. He was very brave with the way he played today. Obviously is one of the best players in the world.”
The 27-year-old Medvedev tallied nine aces, donated six doubles, lost only 5 points on first serve, broke serve four times in the match while getting broken twice.
In the match, Sinner, in his second Miami final, drew first blood break for a 3-2 lead but Medvedev got it right back, then broke to win the set.
In the second, it was Medvedev turn to break fast as the Russian jumped out 2-0 before Sinner was able to get it back. However, Medvedev broke again and never looked back.
Medvedev improves to 6-0 against Sinner.
“I can see throughout all the matches that we played that my shots don’t let him completely, what’s the word, like expose his game, which is hitting winners all over the place,” Medvedev explained of his dominance over Sinner.
“I feel like already this year he’s stepping up, stepping up, so he starts to miss less and less. The match in Rotterdam was a brutal one. I mean, today the first set he had the first break,” he said.
“He’s getting definitely closer and closer, but I hope I can continue bringing him this trouble because I’m sure I’m going to see him in the later stages of the tournament if I manage to play well.”
Sinner was seeking a first Masters and an 8th career title.
“I was focused already against Daniil, because against Daniil I never won. It’s always going to be a tough, tough challenge for me to play against him, for sure. But I don’t know. I feel like I’m getting closer and closer,” Sinner said.
“Even today I felt like that the chances are there, so that’s the good thing and the positive thing. Then we see in the future. But every player has this one or two players where you don’t feel that comfortable with. He’s for sure one of mine. I mean, he’s also one of the best players in the world.”
